- Why I wish to join The Temple & how I found out about it...
- I found out about the Temple from an online friend. I have been very interested in Zen Buddhism and Hindu philosophy, particularly the meaning of the Goddess Kali. Not knowing any one who practices amongst my circle of friends, I seek to expand my knowledge on these spiritual practices and questions surrounding the dissolution of the ego.
- About Myself & My Interests...
- I am very interested in 19th-20th century philosophy, particularly Hegel, the existentialists, post-modernism, surrealism, feminism and the anti-colonial philosophers. I am interested in the psychedelic/visionary experience, one of these experiences is the one that led me to Zen as a philosophy.
I'm very into my music and play in a ritual drone band. I like to play music as a meditative practice. Instead of seeing myself as a musician expressing themselves, I like to still my mind and channel the void.
- My Teachers & Influences, What was it about them that influenced me?
- I was very much influenced by Hegel's idea of cyclic time and the development of the human experience as a self-referential one. What I like about this idea, is that it acknowledges the human idea of the self as arising from nothing like an inherent soul. But from each individual being reflected in the other and it is through the other that we come to know ourselves. Which is why I find Zen and Buddhist texts fascinating, the realisation of the ego or the self as an illusion. Even that our understanding of things is based on the illusion of there being a self and an other not like my self. I also found the Baghavad Gita to be a very interesting read, my personal interpretation of it is that it is about the insignificance of the ego in the face of the vast cosmos.
- Authors and/or Books I appreciate:
- I'm very much into Sci-Fi and Horror. So, of course, I love H. P. Lovecraft, his themes are incredible. I'm also into Frank Herbert especially his short novel "Destination: Void", Phillip K. Dick, Stephen King, Isaac Asimov and Angela Carter. I really like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and "House on the Borderland" by WIlliam Hope Hodgson as well.
- Musicians and/or Music I appreciate:
- My favourite music is music that is odd, angular, moody and sometimes difficult to listen to. Then again I really like some ethereal music as well. I like Trad Goth (The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Xmal Deutschland, Alien Sex Fiend), Post-Punk (Siouxsie and The Banshees, PIL, The Chameleons, Dead Can Dance, Cocteau Twins) Doom (Thergothon, Skepticism, Saint Vitus, MOSS, Cough) Black Metal (Velvet Cacoon, Xasthur, Bathory, Bethlehem) I like various things like Peter Gabriel, Hawkwind and the band, H. P. Lovecraft. I really like going to Noise gigs, with people playing home-made instruments and just generally making a racket.
- Films and/or Film-Makers & Actors I appreciate:
- Again, a lot of Sci-Fi/Horror like Alien, Silence of The Lambs, Total Recall, Nosferatu The Vampyre, Whatever Happened To Baby Jane, Devil's Advocate, GlenGary Glenn Ross and Solaris.
I definitely like some dross as well like Rush Hour, Addams Family, Tim Burton's Batman films and Beetlejuice.
- Artists and/or Art I appreciate:
- Most of the art I like is modern. I very much like the Bauhaus as a movment, the Surrealists particularly, Salvaor Dali, Yves Tanguy and Kay Sage. Ibrahim El Salahi, Rebecca Horn, James Gleeson, Heironymous Bosch, Francis Bacon, Max Ernst, Rodney Matthews and Z. Bekskínski.
