One mind sees from Above to Below - and so, all is insignificant before it. From Above to Below, there is no world, only One.From Below to Above, there is a world - a world to point to the Oneness Above…. The other mind sees from Below to Above - and so all of creation is G-dly to it. From Below to Above, there is a world - a world to point to the Oneness above. At the nexus of these two minds, at the razor's edge of their paradox, there shines the very Essence of the Infinite Light. The first mind descended into man; the second into woman. That is why the man has the power to conquer and subdue, but he lacks a sense of the other. That is why the woman feels the other. She does not conquer, she nurtures. But her light is tightly constrained and so she may become filled with harsh judgments. In the union shines the very Essence of the Infinite…. As they bond together, the man sweetens the judgment of the woman and the woman teaches the man to feel the other. And in the union shines the very Essence of the Infinite. There are three partners in the conception of every child: the mother, the father and the One Above. The One Above provides the breath of life. But that breath cannot enter this world unclothed. If that breath is a "new" soul it is too delicate to survive here without protection. If it has been here many times before (as with most of us) then its memory of the past, it's failure and its bruises, will greatly hinder it from dealing with a new body and a new life. And so it enters with a "suit", fitted for breathing life from Above while manipulating the body it is given here Below. The thoughts and conduct of the mother and father at the time of conception…will allow the child's soul to shine…. Every thought, word and act the soul does in its lifetime must relate through that suit. Even the current of blessings and life from Above must pass through its channel. The soul itself may be pure and luminous, but if its suit doesn't match, that light will have great difficulty breaking through. How is that suit formed? It is fashioned by the thoughts and conduct of the mother and father at the time of conception. Selfish thoughts, distracted thoughts, coarse thoughts - these will provide great challenges for the child throughout life. Oneness of mind, elevated thoughts and caring thoughts - these will allow the child's soul to shine. Even when no children are born from relations, there are souls born above in higher realms. And all that a person does for those souls will return to him.

By looking into Jewish mystical texts and the use of names in Jewish magic, Dr Agata Paluch considers the use of divine and angelic names to gain special powers, cast magic, or even attain unification with God.

Jewish mysticism is an umbrella term which covers a range of theories regarding the Godhead, as well as practices and beliefs extending beyond the requirements of standard Judaism. The term Kabbalah refers to a particular variety of Jewish mysticism, which first emerged in the 12th-century CE in Provence and Catalonia. It was concerned with the inner structure and processes taking place within the divine realms, on whose metaphysical dynamics the Kabbalists tried to exert influence.

This phenomenon was distinct from the older mystical traditions of Ashkenazic origin, which were mainly concerned with rigorous piety and interpretive techniques applied to official Jewish texts in order to reveal their hidden layers of meaning. It was also distinct from magical traditions, which were primarily concerned with subduing supernatural powers and harnessing them to effect change in the physical world. What these different strands of secret Jewish traditions share, however, is a belief in the supernatural power of language.

According to Jewish tradition, the Hebrew language has a divine origin. In Genesis 1, God creates the world by pronouncing his will; hence language has the ultimate creative potential. This view forms the starting point for most of the Jewish mystical and magical traditions, from antiquity right up to present times. Sefer yetsirah, one of the earliest Jewish mystical texts of Hellenistic provenance, dated by scholars somewhere between the 2nd and 7th centuries CE, describes the process of creation as taking place through the 22 letters of the Hebrew language and ten cardinal numbers.

Early on, Sefer yetsirah received magically oriented interpretations, which explained how to imagine and possibly repeat the divine process of creation through manipulation of the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, to the effect of creating a golem.[1] Giving a name to a golem was believed to animate and control its body and conversely erasing the name would annihilate the creature.

In Jewish mystical tradition, any name and its designated object are directly linked, so that the name reflects the nature of its object. Each and every entity possesses a linguistic equivalent – a name – and God is no exception. In some of the medieval Ashkenazic mystical works, as well as in some types of later Kabbalah, the highest form of knowledge concerns the divine realms, with the names of angels and the divine being the most important.

In the view of Nahmanides, a Catalonian Kabbalist of the 13th century CE, the whole Torah[2] is a string of names for God, while earlier rabbinic and mystical traditions select these names from certain parts of the written Law. Apart from the commonly used Tetragrammaton,[3] there are a number of other designations for God, for example the 22-letter divine name derived from the first five words of the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24-25, the 72-letter divine name composed of the letters of Exodus 14:19-21, and several more.

Early Jewish mystical texts are full of lists and interpretations of both divine and angelic names, whose knowledge is believed to give special powers to those who are worthy and capable of receiving them. As shown in numerous manuscript sources in the 13th-century CE Ashkenaz, the commentaries on the names of God and angels which were based on various numerological equations and derived primarily from the biblical text, gained much popularity.

The main idea behind this genre was to explain the biblical text by reading it through the set of names. In other words, to connect the text of the divine revelation as reflected in Scripture with its referents[4] via linguistic and numerical associations. This linguistic link between the created world in which the biblical text exists, and the divine realm, enables the practitioner to exert influence on the realms on high through the use of language.

Early Ashkenazic mystics were mainly concerned with achieving an understanding of the universe by knowing the whole range of textual traditions. Therefore the knowledge of names was pertinent. However, a slightly later interpretation by a 13th-century CE Spanish Kabbalist, Abraham Abulafia, was focused on attaining a prophetic experience. According to Abulafia, the tradition concerning divine names was the highest degree of Kabbalah. By applying the intricate technique of letter permutations, which comprised both visual and verbal, the Kabbalist would attain a mental state defined as unification with God.

The prophetic Kabbalah of Abulafia involved lengthy physical and mental preparations, which required years of study by each potential practitioner. The use of names in Jewish magic, although it required a detailed knowledge of accompanying procedures, was much more democratic. Anyone could follow a procedure detailed in multiple manuals or books of recipes and success depended solely on strict observance of the formulae.

Therefore divine, angelic, or even demonic names were equally employed to various ends. Manuscript sources abound with spells and adjurations[5] showing the great popularity of all kinds of magic among Jews, be it therapeutic (aimed at healing), learned (helping to achieve knowledge and excellent memory), or even aggressive (employed in order to subdue a person to someone else’s will).

While most mystical and Kabbalistic teaching was aimed at understanding and influencing the supernatural realm, magic was thought to provide immediate effects in the physical realm. Interestingly, numerous medieval and early modern manuscripts contain both Kabbalistic and magical texts, confirming the common belief that language was capable of effecting changes on various levels of creation, and beyond. Each miscellaneous Kabbalistic manuscript serves as a snapshot of a complex series of links between speculative (elite) Kabbalah and practical (popular) Jewish magic.

As I was doing some reading this morning , I came across some intriguing words ~ more related to the Goddess of Death and Love, and how the Goddess of Love becomes Death, and Death becomes Love again, in a merry cyclical fashion ~ except that these words were not written by a Pagan, or anyone who loves the Dark Divine Feminine, and the words had been carefully tailored to suit the fears and needs of the fear-based male-dominated religions, rather, in a twisted kind of way.

When the realization dawns that both the two polar opposites in Nature, the Yin and Yang, complement each other, rather than being antagonistic in any sense that they would want to do any malicious harm to one another, everything suddenly becomes clear as a radiant blue Aquamarine crystal. One can then see how both the people who have engineered and those who are been fooled by the Great Deception, have interpreted natural sexual needs as evil and women as inferior and potentially dangerous spiritual beings.

To analyse these texts which deal with perceived evil, deception, wickedness and the draining of the very last drop of the life force from innocent sleeping men; first having neutralized the poison of the rhyming spells within; to examine them wearing the eyeglasses of Truth and then to begin to unravel the deeper inferences and where they come from, is a very fascinating and rewarding task. A job for the Goddess, is a job done in Love, and in this way, one can actually discover some truths about one's own tradition, in a paradoxical manner, which weren't apparent before.

This is possibly because the men who wrote these texts had had access to Pagan manuscripts and sacred texts, before these were burned and destroyed, at least. As the worship and veneration of Lilith is exceedingly Ancient and ever-young, LYLYT became also very much a Jewish Goddess, and was regarded as the Feminine Principle of the Universe in this culture long, long before any contradictory views came about from non-Goddess devotees; the reading and thorough analysis of these medieval texts is very rewarding and revealing of the extent to which the Goddess was diabolized by these religious teachers of the day.

These texts have had centuries to permeate into the subconscious minds of the people who hold them as sacred, and thus will not consider the historical possibility that at some time, the process happened whereby the ways of the Old Goddess Religions were gradually replaced by those of the new Patriarchal Religions. During this process, which took around 6000 years or so, the original Deities, Spirits and Divinities of the Pagan Goddess Religions were practically all demonized - made to become evil and malignant, and everything about the Old Ways, especially sensual love in sexuality; which is so central to Pagan Theaology was described as devil worship.

This was at a time when both Witchcraft and Surgery were being banned, and cats were being exterminated all over Europe because our Pagan Ancestors venerated Cats and all life was seen by them as sacred.

The sexual act was regarded as special in the old days, as a way to celebrate the wonder and beauty of life; as a rite to become as one with the rapture of the infinite. Thus, it was now to be seen, , to be of the devil, and the reason for the downfall of man(sic) kind by the hand of non-compliant, independent women who refused to accept the notion of a single and supreme male god, nor would ever bow down and serve man in every way.. Herewith the texts I am referring to; and I would love to discuss anything you may wish to in connection with them! Blessed Be

Zohar1:34b

" When the letters of the name of Adam, descended below, together in their completeness, the male and the female were found together, and the female was attached to his side, until God cast a deep slumber upon him and he fell asleep. And he lay in the place of the Temple below. And the Holy One, blessed be He, sawed her off him, and adorned her as they adorn a bride, and brought her to him.... In an ancient book I found that this [refers to] the primeval Lilith who was with him and conceived from him, but was not a helpmeet for him...." Patai 81:454

Zohar 3:19

"Come and see: There is a female, a spirit of all spirits, and her name is Lilith, and she was at first with Adam. And in the hour when Adam was created and his body became completed, a thousand spirits from the left [evil] side clung to that body until the Holy One, blessed be He, shouted at them and drove them away. And Adam was lying, a body without a spirit, and his appearance was green, and all those spirits surrounded him. In that hour a cloud descended an pushed away all those spirits. And when Adam stood up, his female was attached to his side. And that holy spirit which was in him spread out to this side and that side, and grew here and there, and thus became complete. Thereafter the Holy One, blessed be He, sawed Adam into two, and made the female. And He brought her to Adam in her perfection like a bride to the canopy. When Lilith saw this, she fled. And she is in the cities of the sea, and she is still trying to harm the sons of the world. (Patai81:455)

Zohar 3:19a

The remedy against Lilith is this: In that hour in which a man copulates with his wife, he should concentrate in his head on the holiness of his Master and say this:
O you who are wrapped in velvet,
You have appeared!
Release, release!
Neither come nor go!
Neither you nor yours!
Go back, go back!
The sea is raging,
Its waves call you,
I hold on to the Holy One,
Wrap myself in the King's holiness.

Then let him cover his head and his wife for one hour, and do thus each time for three days of the receiving. For a grafting which is not received within three days will not be received at all. But in the book which Ashmodai gave to King Solomon it says for thirty days, and it says that after he finished the act he should sprinkle clear water around the couch. (Patai81:463)

Zohar 1:19b

"After the primeval light was hidden, a husk was created for the brain, and that husk spread out and brought forth another husk which was Lilith. And when she emerged, she went up and went down towards the little faces, and wanted to attach herself to them and be shaped after them, and did not want to depart from them. But the Holy One, blessed be He, removed her from there and placed her down below. When He created Adam, in order to perfect this world, as soon as Lilith saw Eve affixed to the side of Adam, and saw in them the beauty of the Above, and saw their perfect image, she flew off from there and wanted, as before to attach herself to the little faces. But the guardians of the gates of Above did not Let her. The Holy One, blessed be He, rebuked her, and cast her into the depths of the sea, and she remained dwelling there until Adam and his wife sinned. Then the Holy One, blessed be He, brought her up from the depths of the sea and gave her power over all those children, the little faces of the sons of man, who are liable to punishment because of the sins of their fathers. And she went and roamed the world. She approached the gates of Paradise on earth, and saw the Cherubim guarding the gates of Paradise, and sat down facing the Flaming Sword, for she originated from that flame.

When that flame revolved, she fled. And she roams in the world, and finds children liable to punishment, and caresses them, and kills them. And all this is because of the diminishing of the moon which reduced its light.... When Cain was born, she could not attach herself to him. But later she approached him and bore spirits and winged demons. For 130 years Adam had intercourse with female spirits, until Naamah came. Because of her beauty the sons of God went astray after her, 'Ussa and 'Azael, and she bore from them, and from her spread evil. spirits and demons in the world.... (Patai81:454f)

...And she goes and roams the world at night, and makes sport with men and causes them to emit seed. And wherever men are found sleeping alone in a house, they [these spirits] descend upon them and get hold of them and adhere to them and take desire from them and bear from them. And they also afflict them with disease, and the men do not know it. And all this is because of the diminishing of the moon. (Patai81:461)

Zohar 3:76b-77a

"For 130 years Adam kept separate from his wife and did not beget. After Cain killed Abel, Adam did not want to copulate with his wife. Rabbi Yose said: "From the hour in which death was decreed upon him and upon the whole world, he said 'Why should I beget children for terror?' and instantly separated from his wife." And two female spirits [Lilith and Naamah] would come and copulate with him and bear children. and those whom they bore are the evil spirits of the world who are called the Plagues of Mankind. And they lead the sons of man astray, and dwell in the doorway of the house, and in the cisterns and in the latrines.... But if the holy name Shaddai with supernal crowns is found in the doorway of a man's house, they all flee and go away from there. And we have learned that in the hour in which man descended to the earth in the supernal image, in the image of the Holy One, and the higher and lower beings saw him, they all approached him and proclaimed him king over this world.

After the Serpent mounted Eve and injected filth into her, she gave birth to Cain. From thence descended all the wicked generations in the world. And the abode of demons and spirits is from there and from his side. Therefore, all the spirits and demons have one half from man below, and the other half from the angels of the supernal realm. Thereafter Adam begot on those spirits daughters who are the beauty of those above and those below. And all went astray after them.

And there was one male who came into the world from the spirit of Cain's side, and they called Tubal-Cain. And a female came forth with him, and the creatures went astray after her, and her name was Naamah. From her issued other spirits and demons. and they hover in the air and tell things to those others found below. And this Tubal-Cain brought weapons of killing into the world. And this Naamah became aroused and adhered to her [evil] side. And to this day she exists, and her abode is among the waves of the great sea. And she comes forth, and makes sport with the sons of man, and becomes hot from them in the dream, in that desire which a man has, and she clings to him, and she takes the desire and from it she conceives and brings forth other kinds [of spirits] into the world. And those children whom she bears from the sons of man come to the women, and they conceive from them and bear spirits. And all of them go to Lilith the Ancient, and she rears them.... (Patai81:456f)

...And she goes out into the world and seeks her children. And she sees the sons of man and clings to them, in order to kill them, and to become absorbed into the souls of the children of the sons of man, and she goes off with that child. But three holy spirits arrive there and fly before her and take that child from her and place him before the Holy One, blessed be He, and there he studies before Him. Therefore the Tora warns, Be sacred (Lev. 19:2). If a man is holy, he is not harmed by her, for the Holy One, blessed be He, orders those three holy angels whom we have mentioned, and they guard that child, and she cannot harm him. But if a man is not holy, and draws a spirit from the impure side, then she comes and makes sport with that child, and when she kills him she penetrates that soul [which departs from the child] and never leaves it.... (Patai81:466)

At times it happens that Naamah goes forth into the world to become hot from the sons of man, and a man finds himself in a connection of lust with her, and he awakens from his sleep and takes hold of his wife and lies with her. And this desire comes from that lust which he had in his dream. Then the child that she begets comes from the side of Naamah, for the man was driven by his lust for her. And when Lilith comes and sees that child, she knows what happened, and she ties herself to him and brings him up like all those other sons of Naamah. And she is with him many times, but does not kill him. This is the man who becomes blemished on every New Moon, for she never gives him up. For month after month, when the moon becomes renewed in the world Lilith comes forth and visits all those whom she brings up, and makes sport with them, and therefore that person is blemished at that time. (Patai81:457f)

Zohar 2:267b

And that spirit which is called Asirta becomes stirred up...and goes to the female who is beneath all females. And she is Lilith the mother of demons. And a man may become stirred up by that evil spirit called Asirta, which attaches himself to that man and ties himself to him permanently. And on every New Moon that spirit of evil appearance becomes stirred up by Lilith, and at time that man suffers harm from the spirit, and falls to the ground and cannot get up, or even dies. (Patai81:462)

Zohar 1:54b-55a

R. Yitzhaq said: From the hour in which Cain killed Abel, Adam separated himself from his wife, [and] two female spirits came and copulated with him, and he begot spirits and demons which roam in the world. And this should not be difficult for you [to understand], for when a man dreams, female spirits come and play with him and get hot from him and thereafter bear [those demons] which are called the Plagues of Mankind. And they turn into a likeness of men, but they have no hair on their head.... And in a similar manner male spirits come to the women of this world who become pregnant from them and give birth to spirits and all of them are called Plagues of Mankind. After 130 years Adam clothed himself in zeal and had union with his wife and begot a son and called his name Seth (Patai81:471)

Zohar 3:69a

"One day the companions were walking with Rabbi Shim'on bar Yohai. Rabbi Shim'on said: "We see that all these nations have risen, and Israel is lower than all of them. Why is this? Because the King [God] sent away the Matronit from Him, and took the slave woman [Lilith] in her place. Who is this slave woman? The Alien Crown, whose firstborn the Holy One, blessed be He, killed in Egypt. At first she sat behind the handmill, and now this slave woman inherited the place of her mistress." And Rabbi Shim'on wept and said: "The King without the Matronit is not called king. The King who adhered to the slave woman, to the handmaid of the Matronit, where is his honor? He lost the Matronit and attached Himself to the place which is called slave woman. This slave woman was destined to rule over the Holy Land of below, as the Matronit formerly ruled over it. But the Holy One, blessed be He, will ultimately bring back the Matronit to her place as before. And then, what will be the rejoicing? Say, the rejoicing of the King and the rejoicing of the Matronit. The rejoicing of the King because He will return to her and separate from the slave woman, and the rejoicing of the Matronit, because she will return to couple with the King." (Patai81:468)

The Vatican's floor

According to Michael Berg, a Kabbalah avid reader of the Wisdom of the old kabbalists, the ARI (one of the best known writers of Kabbalah),teaches us that every world has its own set of ten Sefirot which are unique filters where the light of the Creator passes through. And those ten Sefirot each has within them their own ten. And so on. The Sefirot are like the layers of an onion: circles within circles.

Incidentally , the floor of the Sistine Chapel is patterned with circles, each circle containing ten circles within it.

The idea that each Sefira contains all the other sefirot is an important lesson that Rav Ashalag explores in "Ten Luminous Emanations" about the way we are all interconnected and our global responsibility, therefore.

Rav Aslag explains that everything in our world contains everything else. For instance, the first sefira, Keter, has within it the other nine sefirot (Chochmah, Binah, Chessed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netsah, Hod, Yesod and Malchut).

Everything is of the same spiritual "DNA", This applies to us, as well. Each of us has an aspect of everything and every person in the world.

Because we have elements of everything else within us, everything in this world is attached to each one of us.

This is a concept that Rav Ashlag talks about called "avrut"-the global responsibility that we all have (because said in other words, we are all the same in different manifestations, and we all have the same source, regardless of our own belief systems) . Because we are all intertwined in this way, we have both the ability and the responsibility to influence the world around us.

When we do something negative and fall, we draw all those attachments down with us, as well. When we elevate ourselves spiritually, we can also elevate all of those attachments. Likewise, everyone else is also attached to everything. If I lower or hurt someone, I hurt all their attachments, and since they are attached to everything, when I hurt them, I lower the entire physical and spiritual worlds (including myself).

This hopefully gives us a great appreciation for the way we are all interconnected and the power that each of us has within us.

Knowing this, how do we strengthen the power of our spiritual actions to cause a greater ripple effect throughout the entire world? By studying this concept.

When we read the words from Rav Ashlag about our global responsibility, we awaken that connection between ourselves and everything around us.

In doing so, all our spiritual work and the Light we reveal is even more powerful.

When we study the words from the Ari that speak of the way we are all interconnected, we are not simply studying, we are awakening this energy in the world, and more importantly, within ourselves.Literally, after we study this and understand this , our next spiritual action will be even more powerful because we have awakened this energy within us.

Unfortunately, not everyone studies from the writings of the Kabbalists. As fewer people study the wisdom, which teaches us about the interconnections of everything, that consciousness is not awakened enough in the world and, over time, it causes a weakening of the links between everything. Therefore, it is so important that we have this study so we can reawaken the bonds between all of humanity.

Through our consciousness and work, we can strengthen the bonds that have been weakened over time.

In addition to strengthening the bonds between ourselves and the world, it is also important that we strengthen the bonds between the righteous souls and our world.

Very often in the Zohar, the students of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai would say to him:"Woe to us when you leave this world!". Could you imagine? You are siting in front of your teacher and he teaches you something amazing and you say: "Wow, when you die,it's going to be pretty bad for us" What kind of thing is that to say to your teacher?

The explanation of this is based on a verse in Psalms in which King David asks the Creator to remind him of the needs of the people. As King David began to elevate his soul, he started to forget the problems of everyday people. The souls of the righteous are elevated in such a way that our problems are mundane to them.

The issue isn't that they don't care, but that they are so elevated, it doesn't seem important. They see the big picture, so the details don't matter as much. But our problems are still important to us!

So, King David prays to the Creator to not allow him to become detached, even as he elevates. He asks to stay tethered to the people.

The lesson is, even as we elevate our Souls, no to lose our connection to everything.

Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai's students were telling him not to forget them when his soul elevates. It is said that if we had the assistance from the righteous souls, the redemption would come sooner.

A large part of our spiritual work needs to involve tethering the righteous souls back to our world and reminding them that the challenges we face are still important.

As we think about this and study it, we reawaken the bonds - the bonds between the righteous and our world and also ourselves and the world. Through our study, we strengthen those bonds and in doing so, we have a grater influence on the world. Our spiritual work and Light we reveal become even more powerful.

PS: Michelangelo who did the Sistine chapel had knowledge of Kabbalah.

Origins

1 Enoch: Book of Parables presents two figures: the son of man and Enoch. At first these two characters seem to be separate entities. Enoch views the son of man enthroned in Heaven. Later, however, they prove to be one and the same. Many scholars believe that the final chapters in the Book of Parables are a later addition. Others think they are not and that the son of man is Enoch's heavenly double similarly to the Prayer of Joseph where Jacob is depicted as an angel. The Book of Daniel displays two similar characters: the Ancient of Days and the one like a man. Parts of the text in Daniel are Aramaic and may have been changed in translation. The Septuagint reads that the son of man came as the Ancient of Days.

The identification of Metatron with Enoch is not explicitly made in the Talmud although it does reference a Prince of the World who was young but now is old. However, some of the earliest kabbalists assumed the connection. There also seems to be two Metatrons, one spelled with six letters (מטטרון), and one spelled with seven (מיטטרון). The former may be the transformed Enoch, Prince of the Countenance within the divine palace; the latter, the Primordial Metatron, an emanation of the "Cause of Causes", specifically the tenth and last emanation, identified with the earthly Divine Presence. Furthermore, the Merkabah text Re'uyot Yehezkel identifies the Ancient of Days from the Book of Daniel as Metatron.

Many scholars see a discontinuity between how Enoch is portrayed in the early Enoch literature and how Metatron is portrayed. Scholars commonly see the character of Metatron as being based on an amalgam of Jewish literature, in addition to Enoch, Michael, Melchizedek and Yahoel among others are seen as influences. Gershom Scholem argues Metatron's character was influenced by two streams of thought. One of which linked Metatron with Enoch, while the second was a fusing of different obscure entities and mythic motifs. Scholem argues that this second tradition was original separate but later became fused with the Enoch tradition. He points to texts where this second Metatron is a primordial angel and referred to as Metatron Rabbah. Scholem theorizes that the two Hebrew spellings of Metatron's name are representative of these two separate traditions. In his view the second Metatron is linked to Yahoel. Scholem also links Yahoel with Michael. In the Apocalypse of Abraham Yahoel is assigned duties normally reserved for Michael. Yahoel's name is commonly seen as a substitute for the Ineffable Name. In 2 Enoch, Enoch is assigned titles commonly used by Metatron such as "the Youth, the Prince of the Presence and the Prince of the World. However we do not see Enoch referred to as the Lesser YHWH. In 3 Enoch Metatron is call the lesser YHWH. This raises a problem since the name Metatron does not seem to be directly related to the name of God YHWH.

Scholem proposes this is because the lesser YHWH is a reference to Yahoel. In Maaseh Merkabah the text reasons that Metatron is called the lesser YHWH because in Hebrew gematria Metatron is numerically equivalent to another name of God Shaddai. Scholem does not find this convincing. Scholem point to the fact that both Yahoel and Metatron were known as the lesser YHWH. In 3 Enoch 48D1 Metatron is called both Yahoel Yah and Yahoel. In addition to being one of the seventy names of Metatron from 3 Enoch 48D. Yahoel and Metatron are also linked in Aramaic incantation bowl inscriptions.

Talmud

The Talmud relates that Elisha ben Abuyah (a rabbi and Jewish religious authority born in Jerusalem sometime before 70 CE), also called Acher (אחר, "other", as he became an apostate), entered Paradise and saw Metatron sitting down (an action that is not done in The Presence of God). Elishah ben Abuyah therefore looked to Metatron as a deity and said heretically: "There are indeed two powers in Heaven!" The rabbis explain that Metatron had permission to sit because of his function as the Heavenly Scribe, writing down the deeds of Israel (Babylonian Talmud, Hagiga 15a)

The Talmud states, it was proved to Elisha that Metatron could not be a second deity by the fact that Metatron received 60 "strokes with fiery rods" to demonstrate that Metatron was not a god, but an angel, and could be punished.

The Babylonian Talmud mentions Metatron in two other places: Sanhedrin 38b and Avodah Zarah 3b. In Sanhedrin 38b a Minim tells Rabbi Idith that Metatron should be worshiped because he has a name like his master. Rabbi Idith uses the same passage Exodus 23:21 to show that Metatron was an angel and not a deity and thus should not be worshiped. Furthermore, as an angel Metatron has no power to pardon transgressions nor was he to be received even as a messenger of forgiveness.Avodah Zarah 3b: In the fourth quarter God sits and instructs the school children. In the preceding three quarters Metatron may take God's place or God may do this among other tasks. B Yevamot16b records an utterance attributed to the Prince of the World. "I have been young and now I am old." In rabbinic tradition this utterance is attributed to Metatron

Kirkisani

The tenth century Karaite scholar Kirkisani believed that rabbinic Judaism was the heresy of Jeroboam I. However, Kirkisani may have misrepresented the Talmud in order to embarrass his Rabbanite opponents with evidence of polytheism. Extra-talmudic mystical texts such as Sefer Hekhalot do speak of a "lesser YHVH ", apparently deriving the concept from Exodus 23:21, which mentions an angel of whom God says "my name [understood as YHVH, the usual divine Proper Name] is in him".

Merkabah and later mystical writings

Metatron also appears in the Pseudepigrapha, most prominently in the Hebrew Merkabah Book of Enoch, also called 3 Enoch or Sefer Hekhalot (Book of [the Heavenly] Palaces). The book describes the link between Enoch, son of Jared (great grandfather of Noah) and his transformation into the angel Metatron. His grand title "the lesser YHVH" resurfaces here. The word Metatron is numerically equivalent to Shaddai (God) in Hebrew gematria; therefore, he is said to have a "Name like his Master".

Metatron says, "He [the Holy One]... called me, 'The lesser YHVH' in the presence of his whole household in the height, as it is written, 'my name is in him.'" (12:5, Alexander's translation.) The narrator of this book, supposedly Rabbi Ishmael, tells how Metatron guided him through Heaven and explained its wonders. 3 Enoch presents Metatron in two ways: as a primordial angel and as the transformation of Enoch after he was assumed into Heaven.

And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him. [Genesis 5:24 KJV.]

This Enoch, whose flesh was turned to flame, his veins to fire, his eye-lashes to flashes of lightning, his eye-balls to flaming torches, and whom God placed on a throne next to the throne of glory, received after this heavenly transformation the name Metatron.

The Zohar calls Metatron "the Youth", a title previously used in 3 Enoch, where it appears to mean "servant".
In the Apocalypse of Zerubbabel Metatron is not identified as Enoch. Instead he is identified as the archangel Michael. The text also records that Metatron in gematria is the equivalent of Shadday. While he also appears in other apocalyptic writings he is most prominent in the Apocalypse of Zerubbabel. In these writings he plays the role of heavenly interlocutor delivering knowledge about the coming messianic age.

Etymology

There are numerous possible etymologies for the name Metatron. However, some scholars, such as Philip Alexander, believe if the name Metatron originated in Hekhalot-Merkabah texts (such as 3 Enoch), then it may be a made-up word like the magic words Adiriron and Dapdapiron.

Hugo Odeberg, Adolf Jellinek and Marcus Jastrow suggest the name may originate from either Mattara (מטרא) "keeper of the watch" or the verb MMTR (ממטר) "to guard, to protect". An early derivation of this can be seen in Shimmusha Rabbah, where Enoch is clothed in light and is the guardian of the souls ascending to heaven. Odeberg also suggests that the name Metatron might be taken from the Persian name Mithras. Citing Wiesner, he lays out a number of parallels between Mithras and Metatron based on their positions in heaven and duties.

Metatron seems to be made up of two Greek words for after and throne, μετὰ θρóνος (meta thronos), taken together as "one who serves behind the throne" or "one who occupies the throne next to the throne of glory". The two words do not appear separately in any text known to Gershom Scholem, who therefore dismisses the idea with the words "this widely repeated etymology.... has no merit.".

The word σύνθρονος (synthronos) is used as "co-occupant of the divine throne"; however, like the above etymology, it is not found in any source materials. It is supported by Saul Lieberman and Peter Schäfer, who give further reasons why this might be a viable etymology. The Latin word Metator (messenger, guide, leader, measurer) had been suggested by Eleazar ben Judah of Worms (c. 1165 – c. 1230), Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman, and brought to light again by Hugo Odeberg. When transliterated into the Hebrew language, we get מטיטור or מיטטור. Gershom Scholem argues that there is no data to justify the conversion of metator to metatron. Philip Alexander also suggests this as a possible origin of Metatron, stating that the word Metator also occurs in Greek as mitator–a word for an officer in the Roman army who acted as a forerunner. Using this etymology, Alexander suggests the name may have come about as a description of "the angel of the Lord who led the Israelites through the wilderness: acting like a Roman army metator guiding the Israelites on their way". Another possible interpretation is that of Enoch as a metator showing them "how they could escape from the wilderness of this world into the promised land of heaven". Because we see this as a word in Hebrew, Jewish Aramaic, and Greek, Alexander believes this gives even more strength to this etymology.

Other ideas include μέτρον (metron, "a measure"). Charles Mopsik believes that the name Metatron may be related to the sentence from Genesis 5:24 "Enoch walked with God, then he was no more, because God took him." The Greek version of the Hebrew word "to take" is μετετέθη (he was transferred). רון (RON) is a standard addition to מטטרון (Metatron) and other angelic names in the Jewish faith. According to Mopsik, מטט (MTT) is a transliteration from the Greek μετετέθη.

In the entry entitled "Paradigmata" in his study, "'The Written' as the Vocation of Conceiving Jewishly", John W McGinley gives an accounting of how this name functions in the Bavli's version of "four entered pardes". This account maintains that "Ishmael ben Elisha" is a rabbinically sanctioned cognomen for Elisha ben Abbuyah (the "Akher" of the Bavli's account). This hypothesis explains why the generators of the "chambers" portion of the Heikhalot literature make "Ishmael ben Elisha" the major protagonist of their writings even though this Rabbi Ishmael was not directly mentioned in the Bavli's account (in the Gemara to tractate Khaggigah) of "The Work of the Chariot".

Solomon Judah Leib Rapport in Igrot Shir suggests that Metatron is a combination of two Greek words which mean to "change" and "pass away" referring to Chanoch (Enoch) who "changed" into an angel and "passed away" from the world.
