CHAKRA BALANCING WITH CRYSTALS and suggested layouts

Crystals are wonderful for chakra balancing; their Vibrational energy is ideal for harmonizing the energy body. When placed on a chakra, depending on its particular property, a crystal can help to balance, cleanse blocked chakras, to open and activate closed Chakras, or calm an overactive chakra.

The easiest way to use crystals with chakras is to follow the chakra color system.
Each energy center vibrates at a particular frequency associated with a color, increasing as you ascend from root to crown.

It is lovely to lay down with crystals on your body while meditating, or just experiencing the energy of the stones and working with them. Crystal Placements can be used alongside any form of relaxation, meditation, or healing and will greatly enhance the experience!

Tumbled stones are ideal for body placement, but you can use any shape or size as long as you are comfortable. Remember, the size of the stone does not determine its power.
Place stone on the chakra for 5 - 15 minutes, longer if needed.
A general guide to some crystal and stone options for chakra placement using the color associations:

Earth chakra
Below and between feet, by each foot;
Black or brown crystals and stones: obsidian, tourmaline, Hematite

Root chakra
Base of spine/ perineum/legs;
Red, black, or brown crystals and stones;
Bloodstone, garnet, red jasper, smoky quartz, red carnelian, red calcite

Sacral chakra
The pelvic area above the pubic bone, below the navel;
Red, Orange, dark yellow;
Orange carnelian, orange calcite, golden topaz

Solar plexus chakra
Diaphragm area, Below ribs, above the navel;
Yellow and golden crystals and stones;
Citrine, golden topaz,
Yellow jasper, tigers eye, golden beryl
Heart chakra
Center of the chest;
Green or pink crystals and stones;
Green tourmaline, Peridot, malachite,
Chrysocholla, green aventurine

Throat chakra
Base of the throat;
Light blue and blue-green crystals and stones;
Turquoise, aquamarine, blue lace agate, Aqua Aura

Third eye chakra
Centre of forehead, brow;
Dark blue, indigo, and purple;
Amethyst, Sodalite, lapis lazuli, purple fluorite, sapphire, blue topaz

Crown chakra
Top of the head;
Violet, clear, white;
Clear quartz, Petalite, Lepidolite, Herkimer diamond

Higher crown chakra/soul star
6 inches above crown;
Clear; Celestite, Selenite, Herkimer diamond
An example placement:
Earth: Hematite
Root: Red garnet
Sacral: Carnelian
Solar plexus: Citrine
Heart: Aventurine
Throat: Turquoise
Third eye: Amethyst, Azurite
Crown: Quartz
Soul star: Selenite

As you become more familiar with your own chakras and develop an awareness of their own unique state, you may wish to refine your chakra layouts to bring balance to your energy centers. You may find some chakras feel less active than others, or feel completely closed or blocked.

You could use crystals and stones with clearing, activating, and energizing properties on these centers.

Some chakras may feel uncomfortable, buzzing, overactive, or too open; on these you could use gentler, calming, and grounding stones. They will also be able to work on the back chakras, pretty impossible to do on your own!

But you can go some way to developing your own awareness of your chakras, with practice. Some of the meditations on this forum can help you begin to do this, and in time you will begin trusting the way a chakra feels to you and exploring your own energy body.

Here are some suggested stones and crystals to select from for placement.
Use stimulating and energizing stones on blocked or closed / underactive Chakras and calming grounding stones on overactive/too open chakras.

Earth and Root chakra
Black tourmaline, Hematite, obsidian, onyx are all powerfully grounding stones for the root chakra. Mahogany obsidian is a gentler grounding stone.
Ruby, ruby aura quartz, and garnet are stimulating and energizing for the Root chakra.
Bloodstone can stimulate energy.
Red and brown jasper are gentler grounding stones for the root chakra.
Smoky quartz gently opens and grounds the chakra and brings the energy down from Crown to root.

Sacral chakra
Orange carnelian, sunstone, and golden topaz energizing and stimulating.
Garnet can also be used on this chakra for stimulating energy.
Red jasper grounding for the sacral chakra, good for when this chakra is too open.
Peach calcite calming stone for the sacral chakra.

Solar plexus chakra
Citrine, golden topaz, rutilated quartz are all energizing and stimulating.
Malachite opens and clears the solar plexus.
Tiger's eye with its brown elements is a grounding stone for the solar plexus.
Ametrine is a balancing stone for this chakra.
Aragonite is calming and stabilizing, useful for anger or over-the-top emotions associated with an overactive solar plexus chakra.
Rhodochrosite is calming helps with anxiety and tension.

Heart chakra
Rose quartz opens and clears the heart chakra.
Chrysocolla is a soothing, calming stone making it a much gentler releaser for the heart than higher energy stones.
Rhodonite is a pink stone with black streaks that make it a grounding stone for the heart chakra.
Moss agate calms and balances this energy center.

Throat chakra
Aqua aura and blue topaz are stimulating and energizing crystals for the throat chakra.
Blue lace agate is a softening gentle grounding stone for this center, amazonite grounds the throat chakra.
Aquamarine is calming and balancing.

Third Eye chakra
Sapphire, blue topaz, quartz are stimulating and energizing crystals for the third eye.
Lapis lazuli powerfully opens and stimulates the third eye.
Sodalite, a blue stone with white and black streaks is a grounding balancing stone for an overactive brow chakra, helps with overactive scattered thoughts or intense visions.
Amethyst gently opens the third eye as well as calming.

Crown/higher crown chakras
Selenite, Celestite, Herkimer diamond are all very high-frequency stones, to energize and stimulate.
Chrysanthemum stone helps to pace the spiritual journey, and is used at the crown is a grounding stone for this chakra.

Ways to use crystals & stones for the whole chakra system
To open, clear, balance, activate, and energize all the chakras:
Clear quartz, Herkimer diamond are both high-energy stones. Place on each chakra use double-terminated to flow the energy both up from the earth and down from the cosmos.
Double terminators can also be placed between chakras to enhance flow between them.

Activating and stimulating all the chakras: Clear quartz, garnet
Aligning all the chakras: Yellow kunzite, blue Kyanite
Grounding energy from crown to root: Smoky quartz
Cleansing the lower chakras: Bloodstone
Using crystals with chakra meditation: Remember to love yourself and your crystals and that you can program them with your loving intent for balancing your chakras. Don't forget to cleanse them afterward, with gratitude, for all their help and healing!

The Inner Eye Chakra commonly referred to as the Third Eye or Spiritual Eye, deals with how we interact with the Astral Plane –the Plane on which we create the circumstances of the physical world.

The Sixth Chakra

https://ascensionglossary.com/index.php/Monad

The Inner Eye Chakra commonly referred to as the Third Eye or Spiritual Eye, deals with how we interact with the Astral Plane –the Plane on which we create the circumstances of the physical world.

Level One
Level Seven of the Throat is also the First Level of the Inner Eye. It brings us an awareness of the Astral Plane -the Plane on which we create the circumstances of the physical world. Magic is the result of shaping energy through thought and emotion -this process happens in the Astral Plane and then takes form in the physical world: It is the Throat Level Seven/Inner Eye Level One Chakra which begins this process, and here that we can become aware of it and begin to take conscious control of it.

Right Companion: The Right Companion of the Throat Level Seven/Inner Eye Level One Chakra serves to create imaginings of the Soul’s needs and potentials –that is to say those things which enhance our being and facilitate its creativity, learning, and growth. In imagining these things, the Companion begins the process of creating them through the Astral –though it requires sustained focus to bring them into being.

Left Companion: The Left Companion is concerned with finding solutions to problems and ways to facilitate growth. It seeks ways to overcome obstacles, surpass limitations, to eliminate difficulties. By thus envisioning these things the Left Companion begins the process of creating them in the Astral.

Level Two
The Second Level of the Inner Eye Chakra deals with issues of imagination and fantasy: creating fantasy scenarios about extant or potential situations in our life and envisioning possible ways in which they might develop. In this way, it explores the directions in which these situations might be developed and begins the process of creating their future.

Right Companion: The Right Companion of the Second Eye regulates our emotional connection to our fantasies and imaginings throughout the whole system. Ideally, it gives us enough of an emotional connection to spur the process of spiritual creation without blurring the line between extant reality and potential. A blockage here can cause our fantasies to have too little emotion, thus stunting them and making us overly passive in our relation to life and creation, or can deliver too much emotion causing us to place fantasy above extant reality and perhaps lose touch with reality.

Left Companion: The Right Companion of the Second Eye regulates the content of our fantasies and also of our psychic visions. The Right Companion assembles a lexicon of ideas, words, and images with which we fill our imaginings, and which also are the language through which we translate psychic messages.

We can never understand a psychic message which we do not have terms to understand and translate the pure energy of psychic messages into images that have meaning to us: a process-centered here.

A blockage here can make it difficult either to fantasize or to translate psychic messages, due to a lack of material from which to facilitate either process. Inability to visualize might also be due to a blockage of this Chakra.

Level Three
The Third Level of the Inner Eye, or Third Eye, is concerned with clairvoyance and the reception of psychic information regarding present and near-future events. The ability to translate clairvoyant energies into a form understood by the conscious mind is controlled by the Inner Eye Level Two Left Companion and can be expanded by enlarging the body of symbols and ideas available for it to work with. This aspect of the Chakra has to do with the clairvoyant assessment of what we or others are creating in the Astral, and messages received here can be addressed at that level.

Right Companion: The Third Eye Right Companion assesses the efficacy of our past actions in terms of our Soul’s purposes and our need for spiritual advancement: this gives us a need to discard behaviors that hold us back spiritually and cultivate behaviors that will help us to move forward spiritually. This is the place where we address bad habits and self-defeating behaviors. The Third Eye Right Companion is also the Second Level of the Past Chakra, to be discussed below.

Left Companion: If the Right Companion assesses the value of our habits and established patterns, seeing the need to adopt or discard a specific behavior, it is the Left Companion which actually implements this: the Left Companion builds behavior patterns and also breaks them. When it is well-developed it builds patterns based upon perceived benefit –of course, the benefit level changes as we grow and our needs vary, requiring the patterns to be changed or discarded over time. When this Companion is blocked, we become stuck in old patterns because we are mentally or emotionally so attached to them that we cannot move forward.

Level Four
The Fourth Level of the Inner Eye, or Fourth Eye, allows us to receive clairvoyant information regarding the farther future. Where the Third Eye sees what is being created in the immediate future through the Astral the Fourth Eye draws its information more from the Soul Level and reflects the Soul’s purposes. The most immediate difference here, beyond the distance each Eye is capable of seeing, is that which the visions of the Third Eye may be readily addressed at the Astral Level and are subject to the great possibility of change, the visions of the Fourth Eye, dealing with the needs of the Soul and the life’s purposes, are much less likely to change, and require very deep inner work to alter. The famous seer Jean Dixon described this idea as the difference between “prediction” and “prophecy” –the former being more fluid and subject to potential change from the conscious level, the latter being more certain and difficult or impossible to change.

Right Companion: The Fourth Eye Level Four Companion gives a sense of the need to care for ourselves: to maintain ourselves and our resources, to provide for our needs. This is in fact a function of the Companion’s connection of our Soul level purposes: The Companion seeks to ensure the body’s continued ability to fulfill the Soul’s needs. If blocked, this companion can lead to either extreme self-indulgence or self-mortification.
Left Companion: The Fourth Eye Level Four Left Companion assesses our level of well-being at all levels, and generates a feeling of discomfort when any aspect of the being is blocked or out of proper alignment.

This is a function of the Companion’s connection to the Soul level purposes just as was the case with the Right Companion: The Companion seeks to maintain our well-being so that the Soul may express itself and pursue the purposes of the life through the body.

Level Five
The Fifth Level of the Inner Eye, or Fifth Eye, integrates the higher consciousness of the Soul into the physical body. It facilitates the process by which the body is created as an emanation of the Soul (a process similar to that by which a mollusk creates its shell or an insect its exoskeleton) and allows for the expression of the Soul’s consciousness through the body. Like all other aspects of the physical, the body is created at the Astral level, and it is at the Fifth Eye-level that we may affect the body through Astral workings. Here to the extent of the connection between Higher and Lower consciousness is controlled: it is the seat of the magical Shift of Consciousness and when expanded through exercise allows for ever-greater oneness with the Higher Self. Through the Fifth Eye, the ego or Lower Self transcends itself to become one with the Soul. This is the primary Chakra in our ability to create magic.

Right Companion: The Right Companion allows us to see the potential of creation: to know that all things are possible and that nothing needs to hold us back. This Companion gives us the sense of our ability to shape things through magic –that is the conscious application of thought and emotion to shape energy at the Astral level. The relative strength of this Chakra is very important to the extent of what we can create at the Astral level. A blockage here can make us feel that we are powerless and unable to affect anything at one extreme and at the other make us feel that we can jump straight to magical proficiency without the need to work to develop it.

Left Companion: This Companion gives us focus and direction in our ability to create at the Astral Level –it is here that we fine-tune our creations, and here that we bring the Soul’s purposes into the physical through the Astral. This Companion is detail-oriented and works with the finer points of Astral creation to bring the Astral stirrings created throughout the Chakra system into concrete creation.

Level Six
The Sixth Level Inner Eye or Sixth Eye integrates Monadic consciousness into the physical being. The Monad you will recall is the microcosm of God/dess through which Souls are formed. God/dess has nine Monads each of which is a separated microcosmic aspect of Herself, each Monad has many Souls, and each Soul has many Lives. As we are part of our Soul, our Soul is part of our Monad: connection to the Monad gives us a sense of eternity and universality, and an ability to recognize spiritual connections and patterns at a high level. The more highly developed the Sixth Eye, the more we are able to access the Monadic consciousness.

https://www.lunacourses.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Advanced-guide-to-chakra-and-charts-V17.pdf

Right Companion: The Right Companion integrates the Soul’s purposes into the being. Each Soul has certain purposes for each life: lessons to learn, skills to acquire, experiences to have. So too each Monad has basic patterns and purposes which are unique to it and to all of the Souls and Lives which are part of it. Here we connect to the Soular and Monadic purposes and work to fulfill them.

Left Companion: The Left Companion is facilitating the creativity through which the Soul’s energy is integrated into the being, and through which the being is created and itself creates.

Level Seven
The Seventh Level Inner Eye gives us an understanding of God/dess as All That Is. Here we can connect to a feeling of Oneness with all things, and appreciate the ties that connect all of creation. Here we no longer feel the Soul’s purposes, but Divine purposes in which the Soul is but one part.

Right Companion: The Seventh Eye Right Companion connects us to the Divine Plan –Destiny, Karma, the web of Being. All things connect and interlink at this level, and through the Seventh Eye Right Companion, we can feel this and navigate our place in the Web.

Left Companion: The Seventh Eye Left Companion serves to anchor the Divine energy which is the ultimate source of life into the physical being. The Left Companion directs the Divine energy throughout the system to all the places it’s needed, subtly transmuting it in the process/

Eighth Chakra The first of the spiritual chakra numbered eight, sits above the 7th chakra about two feet. This is known as the energy center of divine love, spiritual compassion, and spiritual selflessness. This chakra also holds your karmic residue -- those energy patterns that you have held on to for more than one lifetime. When the eighth center begins to open up and expand, a new spiritual awareness begins to take shape. The eighth chakra does have a color associated with it and it is what you consider to be ultraviolet light. Unfortunately, you are unable to see what ultraviolet light looks like (at least not with your conventional vision). Please note that it is not a good idea for a person with a closed 8th chakra to try to open up that center to another individual. If it could be done, there could be adverse effects. Suffice it to say that anyone that has healing abilities, out-of-body capability, clairvoyance, or even in-depth dream recall, most likely has a functioning 8th chakra and will be able to do work on this chakra. It is possible.

The Spirit Body of the Monad is the higher mind function of the Observer, watching and aware of forming concepts and making assessments. It is the higher mind principle consciousness that comes to neutral conclusions and decisions based on accumulated experiences. When the spirit is in control of the nervous system of the body, it makes higher evolution of Consciousness action possible.

The Spirit body comes in at the moment of conception through the Permanent Seed Atom in the higher heart complex to guide the formation of the human being's Blueprint and prepare for incarnation. Unresolved Soul trauma can block the spirit from evolving the consciousness to activate the higher heart, as the soul and spirit are intricately involved in the spiritual functions of the heart. The core essence of the spirit within the human being exists in the heart seed and is moving throughout time and space, eternally.

The Monad spiritual body triad is the 7th, 8th, and 9th layer but it starts connecting at the 8th Chakra level Thymus Gland which is the Higher Heart. When the Monad starts coming in like this, the whole Heart complex changes pattern, meaning the Heart Chakra is no longer an Astral Heart 4th Chakra, it is a Blue Aqua Heart. The Heart Chakra turns blue and the frequency coming through starts turning blue, this is a connection to the turquoise of the Mother Arc which ignites the inner holy spirit called the Amoraea Flame. So the 8th Dimension is a Gold color but when the Monad starts flowering in the Diamond Heart, and the Heart starts to configure, it actually looks blue and they call this configuration the Living Crystal Lotus Heart or Crystal Rose Heart. https://ascensionglossary.com/index.php/Monad

A chakra

is structured in the form of a cone-shaped energy vortex, or spiral. Within this structure, there are actually two spirals, with one spiraling in the clockwise direction, and the other in the counter-clockwise direction. In the case of a chakra that functions with a singular endocrine gland, such as the Pineal or Pituitary, the two energy spirals are concentric, and the apex of the dual spiral is directed toward the gland. In the case of a chakra that functions with a paired endocrine gland, such as the Thymus or Adrenal glands, the two spirals are slightly offset from each other, with one apex directed toward each of the individual's glands of the pair.

There are various specialties within the field of alternative medicine which deal with the energy configurations of the body. Among these disciplines, there seems to be a general consensus that the left side of the body is associated with the female nature, and the right side is the male.

I personally prefer the term "nurturing", rather than female; and the term "activating", rather than male; as I believe these terms are more descriptive of the energies involved. Regardless of the terms used, however, the two sides of the energy body seem to be polar opposites. With this in mind, it seems significant that the dual spirals of a chakra are also bi-polar, with the one directed toward a gland on the left side of the body spiraling in the opposite direction as the one directed toward a gland on the right side.

In the case of some of the chakras, such as the Heart Chakra and Solar Plexus chakra, the spirals are bi-directional, in that they extend out from the body both toward the front and toward the rear. In other cases, they are uni-directional and extend out in only one direction. For example, the Brow chakra extends outward only toward the front.

There is yet another distinguishing characteristic. Some of the chakras are able to transmit energies, as well as receive energies. Others are only able to receive.

The Root/Base Chakra

http://www.peacefulmind.com/energy_medicine.htm#Chakra

It represents the element earth and is therefore related to our survival instincts, and to our sense of grounding and connection to our bodies and the physical plane. Ideally, this chakra brings us health, prosperity, security, and dynamic presence. The color for the root chakra is red or black and it is grounded with your power. When this chakra is open, you feel in good health and connected with your physical body. It is used to ground your essence into your physical body. This chakra gives you determination, grounds you, and aids in survival in the physical realms.

When this chakra is balanced, the masculine and feminine energy work together to make you strong and vital, when it is not balanced, the feminine aspects disappear and you can become overbearing and have difficulty with the ego. Physically, it governs the kidneys and the spinal column. To help activate this chakra, use red candles, clothes, or lights. Use red sparingly as it can also strengthen anger if it is present. The symbol of this chakra is the Square.

The Sacral/Spleen Chakra:

It connects us to others through feeling, desire, sensation, and movement. Ideally, this chakra brings us fluidity and grace, depth of feeling, sexual fulfillment, and the ability to accept change.

The color for this chakra is orange. It is used for creativity, vitality, and sexual expression and creates a balance between connectedness with other people and time spent alone. The spleen chakra is located in the sexual organs-- ovaries in women and testes in men.

When the masculine and feminine energy is balanced in this chakra, adaptability and flexibility come easily. This chakra is connected to procreation and bringing in new life, when it is out of balance, it causes one to fear death. Physically, it governs sex and reproduction along with creativity, intimacy flow of body fluids, and energy. To help activate this chakra, eat oranges, and wear orange clothing. The symbol of this chakra is the Circle.

It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. The color for this chakra is yellow. Yellow is very good for getting in touch with your power and building confidence. It is your center of will.

This chakra deals with the human ego, emotions, and self-love. Intuition is believed to begin in the area of our energy center Solar Plexus Chakra. Although the Third Eye Chakra is most associated with intuition, the "spark" is what is felt in the area of our solar plexus. This being the biggest nerve center in our body connected to almost all the organs, the solar plexus is often where we consider our "gut" feeling to come from. This is also where the connection between the three lower Chakra interchange with the four higher Chakra energy centers.

The Solar Plexus Chakra is located near the stomach. The primary energy of this Chakra is free will. Love essentially comes from the Heart Chakra, but the spark is often ignited in the Solar Plexus Charka. This chakra gives you strength and provides the ability to hold energy for personal power and emotional control. When it is unbalanced, it produces rage and destructive anger. Physically, it governs the pancreas, liver, spleen, stomach, gall bladder, and nervous system. To help activate this chakra, sunbathe, drink solarized water from a yellow bottle, eat yellow foods. The symbol of this chakra is the Triangle.

The Heart Chakra:

Location: The center of the chest
Color: Green/Pink
Element: Air
Sense: Touch
Musical Keynote: F (vocalized "ah")
Associated Gland: Thymus
*Controls the heart, blood circulation, immune system, lower lungs, rib cage, skin, upper back
Gemstones: Emerald, Green Jade, Rhodonite, Rhodochrosite, Rose Quartz, Ruby, Kunzite, and Watermelon Tourmaline.
Herbs: Marjoram, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Orris root, Rose oil, Yarrow
Essential Oils: Marjoram, Geranium, Jasmine, Lavender, Mandarin, Melissa, Rose, Maroc, Tangerine, Ylang Ylang
Qualities and/or Functions: Unconditional love, harmony, forgiveness, healing, compassion, understanding, personal transformation, warmth, sharing, devotion, selflessness
In A Word: Heart Chakra-Compassion
Verb: I love

Anahata: 4th Chakra (Heart Chakra): Air, Social identity, oriented to self-acceptance This chakra is called the heart chakra and is the middle chakra in a system of seven. It is related to love and is the integrator of opposites in the psyche: mind and body, male and female, persona and shadow, ego and unity. A healthy fourth chakra allows us to love deeply, feel compassion, have a deep sense of peace and centeredness. The color for this chakra is green or pink. This chakra deals with physical healing, balance, harmony, compassion, and love. The heart chakra is located near the heart.

This chakra is most important in all facets of love, when it is balanced, you trust in others, take risks, love, and feel loved. Physically, it governs the thymus gland, heart, blood, circulatory system, and immune and endocrine systems. To help activate this chakra, eat lots of green vegetables, surround yourself with nature, especially trees and plants. The symbol of this chakra is the Crescent.

Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such as the vibration of sound representing language. The color for this chakra is blue. This chakra deals with communication and expression. The throat chakra is located near the thyroid gland. Opening this chakra allows you to speak the truth and to express your true feelings with love.

From here, you begin to know divine love, and your personal power is strengthened with divine knowledge and wisdom. Physically, it governs the thyroid gland, lungs, vocal cords, bronchial apparatus, and metabolism. To help activate this chakra, have water near you, and use blue candles. The symbol of this chakra is the Star.

The Third Eye Chakra:

Location: Middle of the forehead
Color: Indigo
Element: Light
Musical Keynote: A (vocalized "ee")
Associated Glands: Pituitary
*Controls the endocrine system, the left brain hemisphere, the left eye, nose, ears, sinuses, and parts of the nervous system
Gemstones: Amethyst, Azurite, Lepidolite, Iolite, Lapis, Sodalite
Herbs: Jasmine, Mint, Mugwort, Star Anise
Essential Oils: Anise, Angelica Seed, Hyacinth, Jasmine, Juniper, Lemon, Pine
Qualities and/or Functions: Inner vision, intuition, clairvoyance, insight, perception, imagination, concentration, peace of mind, projection of will, manifestation
In A Word: Brow Chakra-Perception
Verb: I see

Ajna: 6th Chakra (Third Eye Chakra): Light, Archetypal identity, oriented to self-reflection This chakra is known as the brow chakra or third eye center. It is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us "see the big picture." The color for this chakra is indigo, a combination of red and blue. This chakra deals with clairvoyance and mental activity. The third eye chakra is located in the center of the forehead.

When this chakra is open, you experience spiritual wisdom and enlightenment. It is the center of physical and spiritual understanding. Physically, it governs the pituitary gland, lower brain, nervous system, ears, nose, and the left eye - the eye of personality. To help activate this chakra, flowers are extremely helpful. Clothing and lighting in this color also stimulate this chakra. The symbol of this chakra is the Pyramid.

The Crown Chakra:

Location: the top of the head
Color: Violet or white
Element: Thought
Musical Keynote: B (vocalized "ohm")
Associated Glands: Pineal
*Controls cerebrum, right brain hemisphere, right eye, central nervous system
Gemstones: Alexandrite, Amethyst, Clear Quartz, Diamond, Iolite, Selenite, Herkimer Diamond, Kundalini Quartz, Tiger's Eye.
Herbs: Frankincense, Lotus, Neroli, Rose, Olibanum, and Spruce.
Essential Oils: Frankincense, Neroli, Rose, Pine
Qualities and/or Functions: Perfection, integration, unity with the divine, wisdom and purpose, universal consciousness, understanding, enlightenment
In A Word: Crown Chakra-Divine Bliss
Verb: I know

Sahasrara: 7th Chakra (Crown or Christ Consciousness Chakra): Thought, Universal identity, oriented to self-knowledge This is the crown chakra that relates to consciousness as pure awareness. It is our connection to the greater world beyond, to a timeless, space-less place of all-knowing. When developed, this chakra brings us knowledge, wisdom, understanding, spiritual connection, and bliss. The color for this chakra is a mixture of Silver, Gold, White, and Violet. It is the combination of All that Is and the Divine Connection. The crown chakra is located at the top of the head. The silver is the feminine energy of creation, the gold is the masculine energy of creation, and the white/violet light is truth and clarity which gives a clear vision of the truth and protection.

When this chakra is open, you connect with the Godhead and the source of the White Light comes into your energy field. Physically, it governs the pineal gland, the upper brain, and the right eye. Amethyst gems are helpful in activating this chakra when all is else is prepared. The symbol of this chakra is the Lotus.

Accessing Your Needs
In order to balance your energy points with color, you first must access if your energy center points are balanced or unbalanced. Based on the Physical/Mental/Emotional attitudes causing the unbalance, you can access the most prominent color needed. This is why Holistic Healing seeks the metaphysical cause behind the physical problem.

*An underactive chakra is usually one in which the energy is blocked or congested. The energy does not flow freely through the physical system. If it is congested, blocked, underactive, we lack the energy to perform our daily functions. An application of color can help to stimulate the chakra into a balanced state.

*An overactive chakra is one in which overstimulation occurs. There is too much energy being drawn in and out of the center, aggravating a specific condition. An application of the complementary or opposite color is used.

The general rule for the chakra: If the chakra is underactive, an application of its basic color is used. If the chakra is overactive, then the application of the complementary or opposite color is used.

More ways to apply Reiki
Here are more ideas on using your Reiki.
When you become stressed or anxious, run-down or exhausted as a result of something happening in your life, then give yourself additional Reiki self-treatment.

When you give young children Reiki, they often seem to absorb the energy quicker so you may need to make the time spent in each hand position shorter. When they get restless - move on. Most babies and toddlers love Reiki.

Animals do not have much patience and if they are feeling well, they may reject the energy but when ill they will usually accept it. Again, do not hold the hand positions for long one or two minutes is enough.

Cats, however sometimes love it and often arrive to soak up the energy after you have given a treatment. Some cats are not interested. To give
Reiki to a pet, simply place your hands wherever they comfortably fit over or near the pain area with the intent to heal. Reiki will do the rest, placing the energy where it is needed. When they have had enough, they will move. Sometimes they will come back to you when they want more! Some animals Love Reiki and will frequently "demand" some.

Plants will respond effectively to Reiki. Like humans and animals, they have a life force which responds to the Reiki energy. Cut flowers can be given a Reiki treatment which may help to preserve them longer. Just hold your hands above the blooms as if you are blessing them. With potted plants it is best to treat them by holding the pot between your hands, assuming it isn't too heavy.

Trees are an amazing reservoir of universal energy and often they respond to receiving Reiki energy by giving energy back to the giver. So go and hug a tree and feel them 'blessing' you. Some trees are really surprised to have people offer to give them anything.

The general ethical rule is that you do not send treatment without permission but if you intend that the Reiki is offered and may be accepted, refused, observed, or sent to where it is needed the most.

Treatment and ethics review
Reiki First Degree works on a physical level - you usually need to touch the recipient to connect them with Reiki. What can be treated? Reiki can aid in the healing of just about every known illness and injury. It can also help to break unwanted habits such as cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, etc. People have also used Reiki to assist creativity and meditation to help them wake up or to get to sleep.

1. Ideally the practitioner should be in the right frame of mind, relaxed and calm. This is to promote the flow of Reiki unfiltered by the practitioner's own energy. I find that the correct mental state will assert itself when needed.

2. The treatment should be conducted in a relaxing place where both the practitioner and recipient feel comfortable. It is nice if there are no distractions like phones ringing, callers or television or radio, but you can do Reiki any place at any time.

3. Playing soothing music such as classical music or new age music or environmental sounds such as rain forests and other natural sounds can aid relaxation of the person being treated, especially if they have come to see you for the first time and are in strange surroundings.

4. It is best if conversation ceases during the treatment, although sometimes especially during the first visit, the client will want to ask questions. Try to answer them before starting the treatment, or afterward. Although the energy will not normally be interrupted during the conversation, the client will be less relaxed while conversing. Some people do prefer that you explain what you are doing as you give the treatment.

The giving of a Reiki treatment can be in part a spiritual process and it is sometimes possible for a sensitive practitioner to access information from a person during treatment with their own intuition or psychic ability. Practitioners should use discretion about sharing this with the client as it may be intended only for the practitioner. Respect the confidentiality of their client anything that might pass between the client and practitioner during the treatment will not be divulged.

The exchange issue
anyone who becomes involved in Reiki is likely to eventually encounter an issue and Cultural /Ethical conflict. There is a clash between a view that a true "Healer" would never charge or expect compensation for the work, and A philosophy stated to be A teaching of Dr. Usui, that one must give some exchange to receive the full benefit and must balance any exchange of energy and that free treatment creates an unacceptable spiritual debt for the client.

The attitude that people only value what they pay for vs. the attitude that spiritual energies are a gift from God and must in honor be free. These being only a few of the components in this issue. The idea that Usui Sensei required a major cash outlay has been disproved.

The Reiki Organizations in Japan may charge a monthly membership fee and do not accept many members. The achievement of Reiki one through them may take a year or more.
The beggar story (That Usui Sensei healed in a slum for many years until discovering that many beggars preferred to remain beggars) that is often told to illustrate a supposed exchange requirement was probably meant to illustrate that not everyone wants to be healed. You cannot define what constitutes healing to another. You cannot force healing. (This same story is taught in some Buddhist sects with different people and to illustrate different points too and is in my opinion, a traditional teaching Parable that has been adapted).

I do not have the skill to resolve the complex issue of exchange for anyone but regret that such conflicts may restrict the availability of this and other wonderful tools for wholeness. It is common for people to devalue themselves to the point where they will not pay for something that could help their own well-being.

A good portion of the first Reiki class I took was taken up with various stories, arguments and indoctrination on the theme of a need to charge for giving Reiki, and the presentation of Reiki as a career. I mention the issue because whatever the Reiki training or system you work with you will encounter this issue and need to work out your personal values about this. I do suggest that we all strive to put aside our preconceptions on this issue and be truly fair.

It is important that no one feel abused or used. I also do not think it is fair to castigate someone as being greedy if they want fair payment for the time and energy and work, they do even if you wish that the service was free. I also wonder that so many people feel that their own health, happiness, and spiritual evolution are not worth even a modest cost for a class or treatment. Part of the issue for students and teachers/practitioners is how much we love and respect ourselves.

Any fee or exchange should be fair, equitable, and acceptable to all parties involved. It often does seem that people use and appreciate Reiki more if they have made some kind of contribution of their energy and resources and have helped to cover the cost to the practitioner of providing the time, site training, materials, and personal effort for the class or treatment.

Many Reiki Masters who began by offering free attunement find that they cannot continue to do so because the actual cost to them of manuals other materials, childcare, and so on is too great a burden on their families. Oddly it is also true that some of the very people who are most insistent that Attunement should be free also feel that "you get what you pay for”.
The tradition of exchange is a valid one, we all Return to the Universe what we receive and receive what we send out. Exchange can be any use of the energies received for the universal good.

I do accept the concept of exchange for value and I do believe in balance.
Exchange is indeed the universal Law but to me, exchange and Karma are not a simple one to one event that occurs in linear reality but are universal in scope.

We can complete an exchange through service to the universe but on the other hand, criticizing people who need support in order to eat is not good Karma either.

Money does work though.

Reiki does not use massage or tissue manipulation. Your hands are simply held gently on or over each position until the energy ebbs. A little bit of intention or attention is needed but not intense effort or will. Should you become distracted and feel that the energy has stopped just restart it by intending to do so.

When doing hands-on treatments your hands are left in each position until the energy begins to taper off or for three to five minutes if you are not sensitive to the energy flow. Sensitivity to energy can vary greatly from treatment to treatment.

THE REIKI FINISH
Most practitioners end treatment with what is called a "Reiki finish" either by combing and/or smoothing out the aura with the hands. I was taught to end a session by placing my hands one on top of the other in a cross form at the small of the back or tail bone for a minute or so but seldom do this finish anymore.

One Reiki finish I use to end a session is to place one hand or the fingertips held together on 1st cervical vertebrate and the other at the tail bone or from the front on the head or collarbone and stomach and wait approx. 3-5 min or when you feel it is time to stop.
The Reiki runs/flows from one hand to the other, so by doing the finishing steps the reiki master helps to affect an energetic balance in the client. Sweeping the aura three times from top to bottom and again from bottom to top is another popular and effective finish.

This next version of the finish is one that Mrs. Takata taught (according to "VSRC", a Takata first- and second-degree student) (used with permission). “At a full treatment a person would get very, very relaxed, and Mrs. Takata said to help with circulation she would:

Take two fingers (she used first and second) put one on either side of the spine near the neck, or about the 7th cervical, with the other hand press down the palm at the base of the two fingers and on top of the hand. Then "zip" the two fingers down the spine fairly quickly... with practice you will get the right rhythm, not too fast, it will burn, not too slow, the point is to stimulate circulation and always gentle, but firm enough to be felt. Then, she would make circular motions down the back on either side of the spine with her palms, then, pick up one of the legs & feet and rotate it in small circles, gentle massaging the calf muscles, then do the other leg & foot.

Now the person has enough circulation that when they sit up and attempt to get down from the table, doing it carefully they will be comfortable." Apparently very few and possibly none of the Reiki Masters that Mrs. Takata taught have actually used this finish.

Give the person being treated plenty of time to return to the mundane world and may run Reiki for a minute or few minutes with the specific intention that it help the person being treated with grounding. Intuition is the best guide. There is no one single right way to do reiki treatments.

About Reiki Hand Positions
These hand positions are also used in other traditional Japanese and Chinese healing modes and are not exclusive to Reiki. Reiki does flow to where it is needed so a whole-body treatment can be given by leaving your hands in one place, however, moving through the hand placements assures that each area gets a surcharge of the Reiki and that all of the major meridian channels are treated.

Many Reiki practitioners feel that following a set of hand positions may be more effective at making sure that all areas of need will receive the treatment.
Reiki will flow through at each hand placement even if there is another area that needs more attention. Using the hand placements can also help the practitioner develop an intuitive sensitivity to the energy flow.

The basic set of twelve hand positions most Reiki practitioners use ensures that all the major energy channels and chakra are treated to effectively cover the entire body and aura. In time most people develop an intuitive sense of where Reiki energy is needed and may use alternative or extra hand placements following that intuition.

Mikao Usui Sensei is said to have used five basic hand placements and additional ones in accord with the specific needs of each client. Dr. Hayashi adapted the set of hand positions now in common use for practitioners at his clinic who had not developed strong intuition or energy sensitivity.

Most Reiki position charts start with the hands directly over the face and then move to the crown or side of the head. I personally often start by placing my hands over the top of the head on the crown first or on the shoulders. Then I move to the face. Many people are more comfortable with this as the first position and young children are less likely to lick your hands when you start with a less challenging placement than directly over their face. Many people place their hands in the Grasshopper position before beginning the treatment and take a moment to center their selves.

Some practitioners place a tissue over the client's face before putting their hands over the face.
This would help keep odor and sweat off the clients face if there is any. Plus, if a lady is wearing makeup you do not want to smear her makeup with your sweaty hands. Please ask before you do this as some people are extremely uncomfortable with their face covered.

Reiki Hand Positions
Head
Reiki is usually started on the head. The practitioner will lightly place her hand on the face, on top of the head, and under the head for a total of about nine minutes. The energy may, or may not, be felt by the recipient. If it is, it may be felt as heat or tingling.

Torso
The reiki practitioner will channel energy into the torso next and will often start at the shoulders. The hands will make contact with some areas of the body, but not others, and may be held a few inches above the body. Energy will still be delivered in the needed amount, even though direct contact is not made. Each position on the torso will be maintained for approximately three minutes.

Legs
The hands will be placed on, or above, various sections of the legs for a few minutes and energy will usually be channeled into the soles of the feet.

Other Side
The client will be asked to turn over at this point so reiki can be performed on the other side of the body. The Reiki practitioner will work his way down the back and end at the feet, spending a few minutes on each area.

Ending
the reiki practitioner may end the session by running his hand up the length of the body, holding her hand a few inches above the body. She may then cross one hand over the other hand and place her hands over the area of the heart for a few seconds to seal in the reiki energy.

Before finishing the treatment. Place hands on the knee and feet working on one side first and then the next. There are chakras in both these areas and the Reiki energy can release energy blockages there to increase the flow of energy. This helps people to be more flexible and to take action when needed.
I like to run Reiki into the joints, shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and hips, and hands. This releases tension and stress that is held in the joints. Each area of the body has a symbolic meaning in its healing, releasing tension in the ankles assists in reaching higher goals, releasing tension in the knees assists in the release of emotion and the ability to forgive. When the shoulders are free of tension and stress there may be increased determination.

Chair Reiki, giving treatments to seated recipients
Sometimes there is no massage table or other comfortable place for a client to lie down. Reiki treatments can be given to a seated person quite easily and effectively. Seated treatments often take much less time than full treatments on a massage table. The chair used does not matter, as long as the recipient sits comfortably and the practitioner can be comfortable while giving the treatment.

Make sure the recipient is grounded, with both feet flat on the ground and in an upright position. The first and simplest chair treatment is to stand behind the chair with the other person seated with their feet on the floor, hands on their lap, palms are usually turned up but this is not essential, legs uncrossed. Place your hands on their shoulders. Activate Reiki and leave your hands in place until the energy tapers off, that's it. This Method usually runs 10 minutes or so before tapering off.
You can also do a simplified hands-on treatment on seated recipients using the traditional hand positions and kneeling for the lower hand placements.

A more detailed chair method
Positions:
1. Stand behind the person, with your hands lightly on the shoulders.
2. Place both hands, side to side on top of the head.
3. Hand on the forehead and the other on the back of the head.
4. Optional position, from behind the person, put both hands on the chest.
5. From the side, place one hand under the collar bone and one on the back
6. Continue by placing one hand on the solar plexus and the other at the same height on
the back. By this time, you can sit on a chair if you have one
7. Place one hand under the navel (second chakra) and the other at the same
height at the back.
8. Hold both knees, while sitting or kneeling in front of the person.
9. Finally go to the feet.
10. Run your hands through the energy field of the legs a few inches out 3 times.
11. Run your hands down the aura three times: front, back, and sides.
12. Go behind the person and place your hand in starting position.

Hands Off treatment
While Reiki one focuses on contact treatment you can also run Reiki in the aura an inch or two out from physical contact.
Here's a generic hands-off treatment that's used more often by various forms of subtle touch healing practitioners than by Reiki practitioners.
Reiki One practitioners can do this by keeping the hands close to the client's body and activating Reiki.
Begin with the hands over the top of the crown and then move to the side and place one hand in front and one in back and run the energy into each of the chakras and other energy centers moving down the body: brow, throat, thymus (middle of the upper chest), heart, solar plexus, hara-line (at or just below the belly button), sacral chakra, tail bone. During this quick treatment, you may instinctively find yourself moving your hands in and out as the chakra balances and is set in place.

The recipient may become cold. You should have a light blanket available to cover them if needed. A pillow or pillows is useful for arranging for maximum comfort particularly when treating the back. Comfort can be a real concern if you do not have a face rest.

You can do the treatment from the front only or have the client sit for treatment on the back if it is not practical or comfortable for them to lie face down. Many people are not comfortable laying face down.

Sometimes emotional clearing occurs during treatment and can result in the client crying. You should have some tissues handy in case of need. If the person being treated cries do not interrupt the treatment to give them tissues. Interrupting them may result in a reduction of the healing release. On rare occasions, a recipient may feel that your hands are too hot or feel pain or discomfort in some other way. If this happens ask if they wish to stop the treatment or continue. Most people will choose to continue and may feel a healing release. If someone wishes to end the treatment early for any reason then stop giving Reiki.

Washing hands

Wash your hands before and after giving treatment if possible. Wash your hands before the Reiki treatment. Washing your hands also helps give you time for a symbolic entry into the best mental state for the treatment. Wash your hands after the treatment as a way to distinguish your treatment time from your routine. You might carry disposable washcloths if you often do treatments “on the road”. Please don't make a big deal about it as a frantic dive to wash your hands may be quite distressing to your client.

You might have pleasant music playing if you both agree. There are many tapes and CDs with music designed for Reiki treatments and similar work. Some clients are distracted by music while others prefer to have it. Many people burn quality incense or use aromatherapy oil in a diffuser. Inquire about allergies before using a fragrance, and use only genuine essential oil if possible. You might offer a cup of Herb tea or water after a session. Clients should always be encouraged to drink lots of water to release toxins.

I do sometimes use crystals in conjunction with Reiki but in most cases, I limit this to having amethyst, clear quartz or Rose Quartz under the Reiki table and crystals in the treatment room (which is where they are anyway) unless I feel strong intuitive guidance to use them. Combining Reiki with laying on of stones can overwhelm some clients and may even give them a headache. Holding a clear quartz ball or crystal while running Reiki through it is sometimes used for breaking up severe blocks and stagnation in the energy field.

Toning may be used if you feel a strong intuitive urge to do so but as with crystals should not be used casually. These are not part of traditional Reiki treatments and aren't likely to be available in emergencies so please do not depend on these enhancements. Reiki will work just fine with no frills at all.

The United States has very severe penalties for practicing medicine without a license. Reiki is not diagnostic. We do not in any way attempt to locate or define medical or psychological needs. Anyone seeking Reiki treatments that have a medical condition should be reminded to see an appropriate practitioner.

Reiki practitioners do often develop an intuition about areas of concern and possible conditions. They might ask questions and suggest that the client ask a doctor about something. During the treatment, many practitioners find that they sometimes receive intuitive impressions or information about the client or situations. Check with your intuitive source before sharing any such information. the information may be intended only for you or it may be meant for you to share. Confirmation of whether or not to share is usually easy to receive, if unsure do not. Remember that you are a Reiki channel, not a doctor or Psychologist (unless you are of course).

Reiki is quite effective when done as a holistic practice similar to acupressure. Some people feel that it is more effective when Spiritual intention is added. Reiki is self-grounding and has built-in protections. It can do no harm. You do not need to use any extra procedures for protection and grounding. You may choose to do some things such as ground and center yourself. One way of doing this is to connect with Earth and Source.

You can imagine yourself and the receiver as being surrounded by golden or rainbow light or white or violet light. You could smudge or call in the Angels if you wish. These practices are not standard to Reiki nor in any way required and may not affect the quality and effectiveness of the treatment but can contribute nice energy to the surroundings if you want to do this and have time for them.
I often ask and invite any angels or guides who wish to help to join us, I ask my solar angel to allow only the forces of the highest good to join us. I intend that the room be filled with Reiki energy. You can do whatever will focus you to the purpose of giving the session. This is a personal choice. Reiki will work without any spiritual additions at all.

Posture
is an often-neglected area. You will be more comfortable during treatments if you stand with your weight balanced over both feet, knees slightly bent, feet placed a bit apart, but tucked in, back straight, and with your shoulders slightly rounded not held back rigidly.

You can either move both hands at once or one at a time moving the second to meet the first, lift the hands off the body but keep them in the aura. Do not slide them along the body. Begin by spending a moment with your hands in the grasshopper or praying hands position at your heart or throat and focus your intention and activate your Reiki.

Giving the Treatment
the reiki master does the following:

Grounds and centers themselves. Instructs the recipient(s) in grounding and centering themselves. Remind the recipients this is their ceremony and be open to any and all experiences which happen. Perhaps puts on some mood setting music, lights incense, etc. The Master starts standing in front of the recipients and it is traditional for him/her to hold their hands up high at shoulder height with palms facing forward. The recipients should be seated in a row with room around them for the Master to walk around them easily.

Walk around the recipients one full circle and then behind the row again standing behind the first recipient.

There are two halves to the ceremony, one part done behind the recipient, the other part done in front.

Hold the left-hand palm up next to the recipient’s head. The left hand generally receives energy while the right hand generally gives energy.

With the right hand draw the symbols over the crown of the recipient’s head.

When done with their backsides, walk around to the front.

At the front take the recipient's hands between your own for a moment.

Draw the symbols over the hand. Drawing each symbol once, and as you draw silently chanting the name of the symbol three times.

Visualize the master symbol in violet and lightly blow, twice, from the base chakra to the crown chakra.

Lightly touch the forehead (third eye).

Draw the symbols over the forehead (third eye). Again, drawing each symbol once, and chanting the name of the symbol three times.

Gently separate the hands.

Visualize the master symbol again and gently blow from base to crown.

Visualize the master symbol in the palm of your right hand and hold it over the recipient’s left hand. Lightly slap the palm of your right hand into the palm of their left hand.

Once you have been attuned you will want to learn how to activate and use your Reiki. First-degree Reiki is activated by the intention that is you intend or mentally command it to run. Many people use a mental instruction such as Reiki On! Or Reiki now! Reiki may turn on when it is needed even without your conscious intention.

Only a slight amount of attention is needed to keep Reiki flowing. It does not involve mental strain or intense will, just a subtle intention and willingness. You are not pushing the Reiki energy; you are allowing it to flow through you like water flows through a hose.

Not everyone feels subtle energies. Once you have been attuned the Reiki will run even if you are not able to feel it. Sometimes it takes a while before one really feels it running. Whether or not you get hot hands or buzzing or other physical signs of Reiki activation it will work. Reiki is a subtle energy.

The energy generally comes into the crown and runs down the arms to the hands and from there to where it is needed and/or directed. This seems to be the standard flow pattern For Reiki and many other healing energy systems. This is not the only flow pattern just the most common. It is also possible to bring in the energy by other channels but crown to hands is usually easiest and most comfortable. Just want the energy to run. Think/intent that it turns on. One may also sense Reiki as flowing directly from source to the recipient without actually passing through you.

The basic Reiki energy has always been intention activated. The most important thing is to use Reiki often. The more you use it the more comfortable, confident, and skilled you will become. While the standard formal treatment uses both hands, you can also give informal Reiki treatments just by placing one hand in contact. You may find that you can run Reiki from your feet or other location if it’s needed. You can just put your hand on your own body and give yourself a simple treatment any time you wish.

At first, you may want to prove to yourself and others that it works. This can cause you to use your own personal energy rather than Reiki. Using your own energy might make you feel tired after giving a treatment. Usually, the Reiki practitioner feels rested and revitalized after the treatment.

You might experience normal tiredness from standing for a long time if you are not used to doing so. Any unusual tiredness usually indicates that the practitioner has been forcing the energy or pushing with personal will rather than allowing the Reiki energies to flow naturally.

The effectiveness of Reiki and other energy systems could be modified by the practitioner's and clients’ expectations. The limits that they put on the energy with the concepts they hold about what the work can and should do can affect the experienced results. Therefore, it is particularly important that while you are doing treatments you allow the energy to work. Hold the intention that it works for the highest good of the client.

You can begin by mentally stating what the perceived situation is and whether the client is in pain. If there is pain involved, I ask for pain relief to be part of the treatment.

Belief in, or practice of, a spiritual or religious system is not required for the effective practice of Reiki. (While many Reiki practitioners work with guides or angels it is not a practice intrinsic to or required for Reiki). Personal intuition will guide you as you learn to be aware of it and trust it. Naturally, Intuition alone does not substitute for a basic understanding of energy work and the techniques for treatment.

The Reiki energy is in most cases allowed to flow to where it chooses. It can be directed but it is strongly recommended that you do not try to do this at first and never exclusively. You may be unaware of the true cause of difficulty and may mentally prevent the Reiki from doing the best by pushing it where you want it to flow. At first, you may need to remind yourself quite often to allow the flow rather than push it with will.

Reiki uses the Ki or Universal life force energy to effect changes and removes blocks in the energy body which promotes the return of and maintenance of wellbeing and health. As you continue to practice you will probably develop an awareness of the condition of the energy field and may over time realize what diseases may have manifested from the feel of the client’s energy body.

As a Reiki practitioner you do not diagnose, nor do you heal others. You must take care not to alarm the client or to violate laws against diagnosis by non-medical professionals. You may ask questions, make suggestions, or suggest they see a doctor about areas of concern.

You provide a connection for the universal life force to work actively with you and empower the receiver. Energy healing is most effective when the person getting treatment is an active participant in the process. Encourage your client to actively invite the Reiki to heal them to the highest degree possible. This is more effective than passively having an attitude of being done to.

Reiki teachings in the West were passed on until quite recently without written materials or notes. Even the practice writing of the complex symbols traditionally used in second- and third-degree Reiki were destroyed after the training sessions. This was not the practice in Japan. Many books are now available with information and theories about Reiki.

Self-Treatment
Reiki can be used for your own healing as well as for others. This is one thing that differentiates Reiki from many other energy healing systems. Treating yourself is an excellent way to become familiar with using Reiki. It is highly recommended that practitioners give themselves a treatment frequently. I recommend that you give yourself treatments daily, if possible, particularly at the beginning of your practice. This will also help clear up any detoxification symptoms that do occur.

Self-treatment can be done either by putting your hands on your body in adaptations of the standard hand placements. Treatment on the front only will be fine, although you can do versions of some back positions on yourself. You can also just rest your hands on your legs or other accessible location and run the Reiki; actually, just putting your hands down against your body anywhere that is comfortable will work.

Reiki will go to where it is needed. I find that it works fine just to turn on Reiki and let it run; after all, you are in your body. That means that you are touching it. Whatever your Reiki level is, using the hand positions will probably give you more sensory confirmation than a remote treatment and may well work faster on each specific area.

You can place your hands on the front of your body with the mental intention that you are treating the back position. The positions for self-treating the back can be done by putting your hands on the back of your neck over your shoulders and at your back just above and below the waist. Provided that you are flexible and want to do that. Unless you are very flexible, do not try to reach difficult-to-reach places. If it hurts you to do it, it is not Reiki. Reiki will flow to where it is needed.

Preparing to give Reiki treatments to others
there is no single right way to do treatments. Before you begin a treatment on another person you may want to do a self-treatment or meditation to ground, center, and clear your own energy field. This is not a requirement but will prepare yourself to give the treatment. Many practitioners like to place their hands together in the grasshopper or praying hands position for a moment before they actually begin the treatment. This helps the practitioner to balance their own energy and reach the correct mental and emotional clarity to begin the treatment free from personal issues that might distract them.

Before the Treatment
greet your client and discuss what they can expect from Reiki. Answer any questions they have. Ask them about their reasons for seeking Reiki treatment and what they expect from Reiki. Tell the client what you will be doing. Some practitioners have a form and history to be filled out; others do not follow the medical model so closely. Make sure that if an exchange is involved, that is a payment or barter the details are clear and mutually agreeable.

Remind the recipient that you are not a medical practitioner. Reiki is never a substitute for medical treatment. This and other energy and spiritual work may on rare occasions stimulate a brief clearing period of detoxification on all levels. In a few rare cases people have felt worse before they felt better, if this does occur you should ask that if possible, they come in daily for three days in a row. Repeating treatment can alleviate these rare detoxification or healing crisis symptoms.

Have your client remove their shoes, glasses, and any bulky jewelry which might get snagged. They will remain fully clothed. Comfortable non-binding clothes are recommended. Clients do not need to remove wedding rings, dentures, small earrings, navel rings, and so forth. Some people fear that jewelry will interfere or block the energy but it does not. In fact, such items can absorb a reservoir of Reiki energy. The main reason to remove bulky jewelry is so that it will not snag on clothing during the treatment or interfere with hand placement.

Have the person lie down on a massage table or if none is available another sturdy table such as a kitchen or dining table with a pad of some sort, or a bench, couch, bed or floor if that is comfortable for both of you. Treatments can also be done with the client seated.
Most Reiki treatments are given with the client lying down and the practitioner standing. Many practitioners sit in an office chair with wheels. Some do treatments kneeling on the floor. Whatever table or other setups you are using the client and the practitioner should both be comfortable during the treatment. Try to have the table surface at a height where you do not have to strain to reach the hand position locations. A padded surface of some kind is suggested for comfort.

How does Reiki Heal? Everything around us, including ourselves is made of energy. We are alive because life force energy “Ki” is flowing through us. In our body, the energy flows through pathways called Chakras, meridians and auras. When the energy flows freely and balanced, the body is healthy. When the flow of energy is disrupted or blocked, it causes reduced functioning or illness in the body. As Reiki energy is introduced into the body, it identifies the disruption of the body’s energy flow. It then gently clears the blockages, facilitating the body’s natural healing process.

Is Reiki safe? Yes, 100% SAFE ALWAYS, Reiki does not cause any adverse or detrimental side effects. It is believed that Reiki energy works only for the Highest Good of each person and can NOT cause harm. It is safe for anyone and for any situations including pregnant women and children.

Can Reiki be used on animals? Reiki works just as well with animals. Horses, cats, dogs, birds, and other animals have been given Reiki with good results. Many pets want to be in the same room if you are giving or receiving Reiki. Reiki energies can be sent to animals or one can actually put the hands on the body of the animal. You can even use Reiki on flowers, seeds, trees, etc. (If one holds seeds in one hand and gives Reiki to the seeds they will grow better when planted.)

How many treatments should I have? There is not really a set number. Every person and his/her problems are different. Some people only require one or two sessions while others need several. If you are just interested in seeing what Reiki can do for you than just take one or two sessions. If you have a chronic problem you want to work with then make a plan. Suggestion: Start with one session per day for 4 days and then follow up with one session per week.

Can Reiki heal me? No promises can be made about the outcome of the use of Reiki (or any other healing system). It all depends on you, your intent, your background, and the nature of your problem. Healing is a different experience and has different effects on every individual. A big step towards healing yourself is to actually realize your need for healing.
Here are some important questions to think about, reflect and answer truthfully:

Reiki is not just energy that you can give to someone.... it is an energy system that will trigger deep-seated issues and patterns in someone’s life. It is life-altering.... causing people to really look deep within themselves.... brings a great change in, around, and through one’s life and surroundings.... heals all levels of imbalances from this life and from other lifetimes as well.

How does Reiki know where to go? One of the most unusual things about Reiki is that when an attuned practitioner is near a person who is sick, the Reiki turns itself on automatically. The practitioner will often know exactly where a person is sick in their body. This intuitive aspect of Reiki is fascinating. Even if the Reiki practitioner is asleep (or even in a coma) and their hands are placed on a person who needs healing, the Reiki energy will start to flow. This example shows that Reiki is activated despite the practitioner, the patient, or the belief systems of either individual. This is also why Reiki is so simple to use! The practitioner doesn’t have to know what is wrong with the patient to help them. The Reiki knows. The energy flow does; however, appear to flow more powerfully when the Reiki practitioner deliberately places their hands on the client in a conscious, loving way. If the practitioner consciously desires to help the client and uses intent, and if the patient consciously accepts the healing energy, the Reiki is more powerful and effective.

Does Reiki RUN out? A Reiki practitioner can treat sick people all day, and the Reiki will continue to flow just as strongly as it did at the start of the day. Also, the Reiki practitioner, having received Reiki’s healing energy themselves during these treatments, will feel even stronger and better than they did at the start of the day. Often, in other healing systems, the healer uses their own physical energy, or chi, to heal the client. This is very draining to the practitioner’s own energy. Therefore, each treatment is dependent upon the vitality of the practitioner. After a long day of healing, the healer can need to recharge his or her own energy. Many forms of spiritual healing fall into this category; however, Reiki does not.

Is Reiki a religion? Reiki is not a religion. Reiki is practiced by people of all beliefs. Christians, Muslims, Jews, atheists and agnostics can all learn, practice, and receive Reiki. Once you have it, you have it for life and should use it. Reiki practitioners are normal human beings who simply have the desire to heal.

How Reiki can benefit YOU
· Increase your energy levels and vitality
· Experience optimum good health
· Promote personal growth and development
· Effectively treat injuries, emotional disorders, migraine headaches, asthma and
most other health problems

Dramatically reduce stress levels
· Enhance your own innate healing abilities
· Reduce pain and side effects of drugs
· Assist recovery from illness, accidents & surgery
· Release Toxins
· Accelerate the natural healing processes by harmonizing the body’s energies
· Provide your hands with a Natural First Aid Kit
· Treat plants and animals & food
· Restore the whole person to a state of harmony and balance.

Do I need Reiki if I’m not sick? As well as reducing stress, Reiki helps to strengthen and stabilize the immune system. Reiki will boost your own energy and promote well-being.

What is Healing Crisis? Healing crisis is a phenomenon found in many natural healing modalities. One example is the reappearance of prior symptoms, sometimes stronger than before. Another example is when emotional or mental reactions begin to fill the individual’s awareness after experiencing relief from physical symptoms. Why does a healing crisis take place? After having successfully balanced the external (or physical) elements of the energy system, the healing moves into the more subtle internal systems—the emotional and spiritual bodies. This causes the physical manifestations of the original imbalance to reappear as the body addresses the cause of symptoms at a deeper level. A healing crisis is a short-lived event in virtually every case, but it is not part of every Reiki experience. It takes place for some, but many people experience no such reaction during the course of their work.

Is Reiki compatible with standard medical treatments? YES! Reiki complements and enhances standard medical treatment. In many experiences, Reiki can act as a catalyst to healing when the healing process of the individual is bogged down or at a standstill.

Does Reiki work for everyone? Reiki works to the degree that a client is willing and able to use the energy. If a person, for whatever reason, is not willing to receive treatment, no energy will be transferred. If a person is completely healthy and stable in all aspects of life, the effects of a Reiki treatment will be slight, or perhaps too subtle to be noticed. Most of us, however, feel discomfort somewhere in our lives and can benefit from receiving Reiki. It should also be noted that Reiki assists in the highest form of healing possible in a situation. Reiki can only enhance whatever natural healing is taking place; it cannot guarantee outcomes or change fate. Sometimes, the necessary healing may not match our own desired outcomes. This is often where the spiritual aspect of Reiki is most obvious.

Sometimes, if a person’s time has come, being able to feel at peace with death is the highest form of healing possible, even though we would prefer they have a complete cure. In this context, the word ‘healing’ has a somewhat different meaning from the widely accepted meaning, which seems to be ‘curing of symptoms’ (for that is what most medical doctors aim to do in their practice). The other meaning for ‘healing’, used in the practice of Reiki and spiritual healing is the return to ‘wholeness. There is an ideal form ~ wholeness ~ for each of us, being the highest and clearest expression of who we are. Pain or disease comes from any deviation from this ideal form and healing is to bring the physical/emotional/mental/spiritual self into closer alignment with one’s ideal.

Dis-ease is everything from cancer, AIDS, and other life-threatening illnesses to headaches and depression. Anything that keeps a person from feeling optimistic about life, physically fit, including a healthy love for others and their well-being, is dis-ease. The sources can be as varied as the forms they manifest into. Technically, dis-ease means that somewhere, somehow, energy is blocked in or around the body, so it is out of balance. So, some part of us; physical, mental/emotional, or spiritual needs our attention. Reiki practice avoids treating symptoms endlessly and separately and instead gives energy to the whole body system, allowing the body to heal itself. It is only a matter of time before it is discovered as the best tool to heal an ailing human body is another human body that is attuned to the correct frequencies to create the harmonics in the ailing body – which is called REIKI.

REIKI FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF REIKI DURING/AFTER PREGNANCY? Pregnancy is a time of changes, some eagerly embraced, and others less welcome. Reiki is a wonderful way to relax, increase your energy and relieve discomfort during your pregnancy. It can help you cope with stress and fatigue, and ease aches and pains. It can: Relieve pain in your muscles and joints that must support extra weight; increase flexibility, making it easier for your body to adjust to additional weight; relieve abdominal soreness caused by an active baby’s kicks; help with fears and worries, provide better sleeping patterns, bring peace and calm, ease constipation, gas, and heartburn as general relaxation stimulates intestinal movement; reduce excess fluid retention by gently pushing fluid into circulation where it can be eliminated; slow the progress of varicose veins as enhanced circulation lowers pressure on bulging veins; relieve headaches caused by tension or constipation. Reiki is also extremely beneficial to help new mothers with post-natal depression.

REIKI FOR CHILDREN

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF REIKI ON INFANTS/CHILDREN? The positive effects of Reiki on infants and children have been well researched in many studies. Among the results of the major studies are: Children and infants who were given Reiki show improved sleeping patterns, diminished anxious behavior, and significantly reduced stress indicators such as heart rate and stress hormone levels. Premature babies who were regularly given Reiki had better digestion, gained weight faster, had better sleep patterns, performed better on developmental tasks, acquired mental and motor skills earlier, and were more relaxed than other babies. Early touch also benefited the developing nervous systems of these infants. *Institutionalized infants who received extra touch developed visual attentiveness earlier than babies who didn’t. Visually impaired babies whose parents touched them early and often were able to reach towards sound sooner than other babies.

Reiki in Japan the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai

Dr. Usui discovered Reiki during a mystical experience on Mt. Kurama, a sacred mountain north of Kyoto, Japan in March 1922. A few months later he started a Reiki organization called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai which means “Usui Reiki Healing Society.” He also opened a Reiki clinic in Harajuku, Aoyama, and Tokyo. There he taught classes and gave Reiki treatments. After the Great Kanto earthquake in 1923, the demand for Reiki was great and it was at this time that Usui began training other teachers.

Usui was the first president of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. After he died, he was followed by a succession of presidents: Mr. Ushida, Mr. Iichi Taketome, Mr. Yoshiharu Watanabe, Mr. Toyoichi Wanami, Ms. Kimiko Koyama, and the current successor to Dr. Usui as of 1998 is Mr. Kondo. Contrary to what has been said by some in the west, there is no "lineage bearer" or "Grandmaster" in the system of healing started by Dr. Usui, only the succession of presidents listed above. While Dr. Hayashi was a respected Reiki master and made valuable contributions to the development of Reiki, he was never the president of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.

Reiki is a generic word in Japan and is used to describe many types of healing and spiritual work. It is not exclusive to the system of healing based on Dr. Usui's method. The system of healing that evolved from Dr. Usui's method is called the Usui System of Natural Healing or Usui Reiki Ryoho.

Origins
There has been a lot of speculation about where Reiki came from, but there has been little confirmation of most of these ideas. Some say that Reiki originated from Buddhism or that it contains Buddhist concepts or techniques. I spoke with a Japanese Reiki master who is also a Buddhist and has done historical research into Reiki in Japan. He said that he could see no connection between Reiki and Buddhism and that he felt that Reiki is religiously neutral. While Dr. Usui may have been a Buddhist, he had also studied Christianity and had lived with a Christian family for a time. It is clear he had a very broad background in many religious teachings and philosophies

The clearest and most authentic understanding we have been able to discover is that Dr. Usui originated the system of healing he taught and practiced based first on his mystical experience on Mt. Kurama and then later by making use of his studies in many different areas of knowledge. Usui Reiki has no connection to Buddhism, nor is it connected to Tibetan Buddhism or Tibetan shamanism or any other religion. One of the stories says Dr. Usui discovered the Reiki symbols in a Tibetan sutra, but even though people have carefully looked, no one has been able to find a Tibetan sutra with Reiki symbols in it. This is further validated by Dr. Usui’s own writing in which he says, "Our Reiki Ryoho is something absolutely original and cannot be compared with any other (spiritual) path in the world." (Taken from his Reiki Ryoho Handbook)

Reiki in the West
Usui Sensei asked Hayashi Sensei to develop Reiki which he did and Mrs. Takata who brought it to the west also changed the way it was practiced. Because of this, the system that has been taught in the west which has in turn spread all over the world is considerably different than the Reiki methods of both Hayashi Sensei and Usui Sensei.

During his mystical experience on Mt. Kurama, Dr. Usui received the ability to do Reiki treatments. Later he added the Reiki Ideals, the three Reiki II symbols, hand positions, and the attunement process. Following Dr. Usui's request to develop the system of Reiki, Dr. Hayashi created a complex hand position system based on his experience as a medical doctor and from his experience working in his Reiki clinic. He also further developed the attunement process and may have been the one to add the master symbol, although it is possible that the master symbol was added by Mrs. Takatal. (Note that Dr. Usui and his organization the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai did not use a master symbol)

Mrs. Takata developed what she called the foundation treatment which is a simplified version of what she learned from Dr. Hayashi. The foundation treatment consists of 4 hand positions on the abdomen area and 3 or 4 hand positions for the head and a few optional hand positions on the back. She also decided not to teach most of the techniques (now called Japanese Reiki techniques) she learned from Dr. Hayashi, thus simplifying the system for Westerners. (see How Mrs. Takata Practiced and Taught Reiki that was featured in the Spring 07 issue of Reiki News Magazine) She also added the fee structure previously mentioned. So, while the lineage is the same, going back to Dr. Usui, and the 3 symbols from Reiki II are the same as Dr. Usui taught, in many ways, the system of Reiki she taught was different than what Dr. Usui had originally created. The important thing is that her system is effective with the addition of the foundation treatment being her most important contribution to Reiki.

The required waiting periods between classes were added by several of Mrs. Takata's Masters after she passed on. Actually, according to Mrs. Yamaguchi who became a Reiki teacher under Dr. Hayashi, Dr. Hayashi taught that Reiki treatments should be given for free. This is why he taught mostly to wealthy students who could afford to practice without charging money. So, while some say payment must be received, we know that this is not a requirement and that it is really up to the practitioner to decide if they want to charge a fee or not for Reiki treatments.

Takata said Reiki is an oral tradition and because of this didn’t allow her students to take notes or to tape-record and she had no written handouts; neither did she write anything about how Reiki is to be taught. (We now know she did teach one class in June 1975 in which she did give handouts and did allow her students to take notes. See the summer 09 issues of Reiki News Magazine.) Because of this, it became difficult to verify exactly how Reiki is to be practiced. This became especially problematic after she passed on.

After Mrs. Takata's transition, a few teachers began making changes in the way they taught Reiki. Most of the changes were beneficial and included the addition of knowledge and healing skills the teachers had learned from other systems or had acquired from inner guidance. However, some changes were restrictive, making it more difficult for students to progress.

Some took the Third Degree and divided it into several small parts, calling each new part a new Degree and charging additional money. Often, the fact that they had modified the Takata system was not mentioned and when their students became teachers, they began teaching what they thought was pure Takata style Reiki and even calling it pure Usui Reiki when in fact it was not. In this way, many varieties of Reiki have developed with some thinking they have the only authentic version of Reiki when actually what they are teaching is a modified form. Much of the information on the web about the history of Usui Reiki and how it is taught and practiced has not been well researched and people are simply publishing anything they have heard without attempting to find the source or check references.

The editors of this FAQ and The International Center for Reiki Training which provided much of the source material for this FAQ support all Reiki schools which adhere to the original spirit of Reiki. See our Purpose and Philosophy and The Reiki Ideals - The Ethical Principles of Reiki. At the same time, we encourage all those researching Reiki to understand that not everything published on the web about Reiki has been researched and one needs to find authentic sources if one is to gain a clear understanding of Usui Reiki Ryoho. The ideas and facts in this FAQ have been carefully researched and have come from reliable and verifiable sources. (Please see the history of Reiki as described in Reiki, The Healing Touch, which contains references to all the above information.)

The Development of Usui Reiki
The following three passages trace the story of Reiki as researched by William Lee Rand. A more detailed explanation can be found in his book, Reiki, The Healing Touch.

Dr. Mikao Usui

Dr. Mikao Usui, or Usui Sensei as he is called by his students in Japan, is the founder of the Usui System of Reiki. He was born August 15, 1865, in the village of Yago in the Yamagata district of Gifu prefecture, Japan. Usui Sensei had an avid interest in learning and worked hard at his studies. He traveled to Europe and China to further his education. His curriculum included medicine, psychology, and religion. It is thought that he was from a wealthy family, as in Japan only the wealthy could afford to send their children to school. Eventually, he became the secretary to Shinpei Goto, head of the department of health and welfare who later became the Mayor of Tokyo. The connections Usui Sensei made at this job helped him to become a successful businessman.

In March 1922 Usui's personal and business life was failing. As a sensitive spiritualist, Usui Sensei had previously spent much time meditating at power spots on Mt. Kurama. So, he decided to travel to this holy mountain where he enrolled in Isyu Guo, a twenty-one-day training course. He was not seeking to discover a method of healing, but only to solve his personal problems.

We do not know for certain what he was required to do during this training, but it is likely that fasting, meditation, chanting, and prayers were part of the practice. In addition, we know there is a small waterfall on Mt. Kurama where even today people go to meditate. This meditation involves standing under the waterfall and allowing the waters to strike and flow over the top of the head, a practice that is said to activate the crown chakra. Japanese Reiki Masters think that Usui Sensei may have used this meditation as part of his practice. In any case, it was during the Isyu Guo training that the great Reiki energy entered his crown chakra. This greatly enhanced his healing abilities and he realized he had received a wonderful new gift - the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own energy!

Accepting the responsibility to practice and teach this new gift, Usui Sensei created the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai and also opened a Reiki clinic. He also further developed Reiki creating the various levels of training, adding 3 symbols to the practice, and developing an attunement method.

Please refer to Reiki, The Healing Touch, by William Lee Rand for a more detailed description of how Dr. Usui discovered and developed Reiki.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi

Dr. Hayashi was a retired naval officer. He received the Reiki Master initiation from Dr. Usui about 1925 at the age of 47.

Up to this point, the Usui system of healing consisted of the energy itself, the 3 Reiki II symbols, the Usui hand positions, the attunement process, and the Reiki ideals. After being asked to do so by Usui sensei, Dr. Hayashi went on to develop the Usui system of healing. He opened a Reiki clinic in Tokyo and kept detailed records of the treatments given. He used this information to create the Hayashi Healing Guide that included detailed hand positions for specific illnesses and conditions. He changed the way Reiki sessions were given by having the client lay on a table and be treated by 2 practitioners. He simplified the attunement process and may have been the one to add the master symbol, thus increasing the effectiveness of the attunement. (Although this may have been added by Mrs. Takata.) This may be why Takata only give a limited number of attunements for each level, whereas Dr. Usui recommended the student receive as many attunements or reiju’s as possible.

Hawayo Takata

Takata photo was taken on June 11, 1979, Penticton, British Columbia, Canada.
Used with permission from the estate of Gunter and Ursula Baylor

Reiki comes to the West
Hawayo Takata was born at dawn on December 24th, 1900, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Her parents were Japanese immigrants and her father worked in the sugar cane fields. She worked very hard as she was growing up. She eventually married the bookkeeper of the plantation where she was employed. His name was Saichi Takata and they had two daughters. In October 1930, Saichi died at the age of thirty-four leaving Mrs. Takata to raise their two children.
In order to provide for her family, she had to work very hard with little rest. After five years she developed severe abdominal pain, a lung condition, and had a nervous breakdown.

Soon after this, one of her sisters died and it was the responsibility of Hawayo to travel to Japan where her parents had moved to deliver the news. She also felt she could receive help for her health in Japan.
She took a steamship and was accompanied by her sister-in-law. After informing her parents of the death of her sister, she entered a hospital. It was found that she had a tumor, gallstones, and emphysema. She rested for several weeks to prepare for the operation.

On the operating table, just before the surgery was to begin, Hawayo heard a voice. The voice said, "The operation is not necessary. The operation is not necessary." She had never heard a voice speak to her like this before. She wondered what it meant. The voice repeated the message a third time even louder. She knew she was wide awake and had not imagined the voice. It was so unusual, yet so compelling that she decided to ask the doctor. She got off the operating table, wrapped a sheet around herself, and asked to speak to the doctor.

When the doctor finally came, she asked if he knew of any other way that her problems could be helped. The doctor knew of Dr. Hayashi's Reiki clinic and told Hawayo about it. This was something she wanted to try.

At the Reiki clinic, she began receiving treatments. She had never heard of Reiki before and did not know what it was. Using byosen scanning the practitioners could sense what was wrong with Mrs. Takata. Their diagnosis very closely matched the doctors at the hospital. This impressed her and gave her confidence in what they were doing.

Two Reiki practitioners would treat her each day. The heat from their hands was so strong that she thought they were using some kind of equipment. She looked around but saw none. Seeing the large sleeves of the Japanese kimono one of the practitioners was wearing, she thought she had found the location of the equipment.

She grabbed the sleeves but found nothing. The startled practitioner wanted to know what she was doing and when she explained, he began to laugh. Then he told her about Reiki and how it worked.

Mrs. Takata received daily treatments and got progressively better. In four months, she was completely healed. Impressed with the results, she wanted to learn Reiki. However, it was explained that Reiki was Japanese and that it was intended to stay in Japan. It could not be taught to an outsider.

Mrs. Takata talked to the surgeon at the hospital and convinced him to ask Dr. Hayashi to allow her to learn Reiki. Since Dr. Hayashi wanted to teach Reiki to another woman besides his wife, and since Mrs. Takata was so persistent, he decided that she should be the one. In the spring of 1936, Mrs. Takata received First Degree Reiki. She worked with Dr. Hayashi for one year and then received Second Degree Reiki.

Mrs. Takata returned to Hawaii in 1937. She was soon followed by Dr. Hayashi and his daughter who came to help establish Reiki in Hawaii. In the winter of 1938, Dr. Hayashi initiated Hawayo Takata as a Reiki Master. She was the thirteenth and last Reiki Master Dr. Hayashi initiated.

Takata did not teach or practice Reiki the same way she had learned from Dr. Hayahsi. She chose to modify the system by creating her own hand position method she called the foundation treatment. In addition, she eliminated what we in the west have come to call the Japanese Reiki techniques, which include byosen scanning, kenyoku, and gyoshi ho to name a few. In effect, she simplified the system making it easier to learn. Even so, her system is effective and we must honor her for being an innovator.

Between 1970 and her transition on December 11, 1980, Mrs. Takata initiated twenty-two, Reiki Masters. Below is a list of the Reiki Masters she initiated. This is the list she gave to her sister before she passed through transition.

George Araki
Barbara McCullough
Beth Grey
Ursula Baylow (deceased)
Paul Mitchell
Iris Ishikura (deceased)
Fran Brown
Barbara Weber Ray
Ethel Lombardi
Wanja Twan
Virginia Samdahl (deceased)
Phyllis Lei Furumoto
Dorothy Baba (deceased)
Mary McFaden
John Gray
Rick Bockner
Bethel Phaigh (deceased)
Harry Kuboi
Patricia Ewing
Shinobu Saito
Kay Yamashita (Takata's Sister)
Barbara Brown

The original twenty-two teachers have taught others. In the time since Mrs. Takata experienced transition, Reiki has spread rapidly in the West. It is now practiced throughout North and South America, Europe, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, India, and other parts of the world. There are now an estimated 1,000,000 Reiki Masters with as many as 4,000,000 people having been initiated into Reiki throughout the world.
