Already this past summer, the two planets were growing closer in the night sky. Later this month, they will appear closer to each other than they have for centuries.

If popular culture has taught us anything about the holidays, it's that this is a season of reunions: a time when people conquer great distances and lengthy separations just to be together again. Usually, though, such stories involve cross-country trips — not the orbits of the two largest planets in our solar system.

This year is different.

On Dec. 21, Jupiter and Saturn — which are actually separated by more than 400 million miles — are expected to appear closer to each other in the night sky than they have for centuries. Seen at the right hour, whether by telescope or the naked eye, the gas giants will be separated by roughly a fifth of the diameter of the typical full moon. At this proximity, the planets will appear to touch or even form one large, brilliant star in the sky.

The spectacle is a curious effect of their orbits. Since Jupiter takes a little less than 12 years to circle the sun and Saturn takes more than 29, the planets appear to earthlings to meet roughly every 20 years, in what astronomers call a "great conjunction." The last great conjunction occurred in May 2000, though its position in the sky at the time meant the average stargazer likely lost it in the glare of the sun.

But you'll need to reach much further into the past to find the last instance such a conjunction was this close and this visible to stargazers. The Perth Observatory in Australia says that Jupiter and Saturn last approached this closely to each other in July 1623, but as with the conjunction in 2000, it was hard to spot.

"You'd have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky," Patrick Hartigan, an astronomer at Rice University, explained in a statement last month.

There's still another holiday connection at work here, beyond a simple coincidence of timing. Some astronomers, dating back to Johannes Kepler in the 17th century, have conjectured that the Star of Bethlehem that guided the three wise men to Jesus Christ's birthplace in the Bible was a conjunction like the one set to appear later this month — although likely one involving different planets.

Saturn and Jupiter began appearing close to each other this past summer, but this spectacle of proximity will be clearest beginning in mid-December.

"Look for them low in the southwest in the hour after sunset. And on December 21st, the two giant planets will appear just a tenth of a degree apart — that's about the thickness of a dime held at arm's length!" NASA explained earlier this month. "This means the two planets and their moons will be visible in the same field of view through binoculars or a small telescope. In fact, Saturn will appear as close to Jupiter as some of Jupiter's moons."

After the winter solstice, the two planets will appear to begin moving apart again.

Now, this sentimental holiday reunion is no Hallmark movie; if you miss it this year, don't expect to see it again next December. Astronomers say there won't be another great conjunction this close until 2080.

Directions for Making a Burlap Wreath:

1. Use one end of the burlap ribbon to make a knot around the wire wreath. You can also secure the burlap with a piece of string or pipe cleaner.

2. Push the burlap into one of the sections of the form. Be sure to twist it so that the loop is sideways (this ensures that the wire wreath form is covered).

3. Continue making loops but make sure that the next “bubble” in the wreath is next to the one you just did. This helps hold the previous loop in place. Keep the loops even in size as you push the burlap through the form.

For a more uniform wreath keep the bubbles or loops even

Image via: Little Lovely Leaders

4. Continue making loops until the wreath is as full as you want. You can make all your “bubbles” the same size or vary the size for a more asymmetrical finished burlap wreath.

5. Cut off the burlap if you have extra.

6. Make another knot to complete the wreath or tuck the end into the bubbles.

7. Use pipe cleaners to keep the burlap in place on the back of the wreath.

Extra Tips for your Burlap Wreath Tutorial:

Depending on if you want to embellish your wreath with flowers or bows you can hot glue on your accessories or you can create your own bow from Wired Ribbon, 2-1/2-Inch Natural Color.

1. Hot glue the leaves, flowers, bows, and other ornaments you may have.

2. Watch the wreath video above to learn how to attach the wire ribbon bow.

Once you’ve completed your wreath, step back and decide if it’s how you envisioned. If you need to add more embellishments, more colored wire ribbon, or if it looks good for your home. If you have any ideas of how you make your burlap wreaths, we’d love to hear from you in the comments section!

Hekate and Her Cauldron of Rebirth

Hekate has always been associated with the life cycle. She is known as The Great Mother from her earliest days, and her role as divine midwife is recounted in many tales. Our Dark Mother offers the dark, wet womb of her cave for those seeking transformation. Goddess of the moon that rises and sets within her cave. Witch-mother of the eternal sorceresses who await us around the cauldron, and ruler of her horde that stand guard.

This is a ritual of dismemberment and death leading to a powerful rebirth. It is through the intentional disembodiment of our present “shell” that we can find the means to release our truth. A powerful journey, for sure. Hekate has long been associated with both destruction and healing. She is the three-formed goddess of the crossroads, guiding our way with her torches, and protector against deleterious forces. Hekate is the Dark Mother of the Underworld, opening her cave as a haven from whence we can reclaim our power and explore the mysteries of her witches.

Hekate’s ancient cult held rituals in caves sacred to her. The cave has been associated with her, and her witches, for thousands of years. The ancients believed that the moon rose and set from such a cave. Her ancient witches cast their spells in caves sacred to her. They used their cauldrons, deep within such places, to grant life, death and rebirth to those brave – or foolish – enough to enter. The energy of the cauldron of rebirth lives on in the innermost chamber of Hekate’s Cave. Beware of the lessons of the past. Approach rebirth with deep sincerity or risk Hekate’s reproach.

Preparation

Preparation for the Cauldron of Rebirth Ritual includes completing the previous two stations of the Holy Darkness Cycle. I’m offering this publicly, so it is entirely up to you how you proceed. This is oracular work that should be undertaken with gravitas. Of course, we can be called to do things according to our own spiritual needs. It is entirely up to you to decide. The only tool required for this working is a cauldron, or other open container in which you can place incense.

Correspondences

The color for this ritual is white, added to the black of the first station and the red of the second. Create an altar reflecting these three hues to help focus your energy.

You can wear a white robe, scarf, veil, etc. to symbolize the energy of rebirth.

Hekate’s horde can be represented using images, statues, bones, etc. since they are part of the ritual. Select animals that you resonate with deeply or ones that present themselves to you for this working. Read more about her animal menagerie: Hekate’s Animals: Ancient Creatures, Modern Menagerie, and Ways to ...

Botanicals: Continue using the deathwalking oil for anointing to activate your ability to enter Hekate’s Cave. The formula can be found here: Deathwalking Oil & Ritual. Alternatively, lavender oil/water can be substituted.

Hekate’s Cauldron Incense: crush a bit of pine cone, a stub of cinnamon stick, birch bark scraps, a pinch each of dried rosemary and mugwort. Substitute as necessary with botanicals possessing similar properties. You can blend oils or essences if you prefer. A few drops of each. If none of this is available to you, burn white sage or diffuse lavender oil. Do what works for you. Burn the botanicals in the cauldron. If you’re using oils, place a few drops in there instead. A more detailed description of the botanicals is provided in the guide. Find the link at the end of this article.

Altar construction: The goal is to create an energy grid that will open the entrance to Hekate’s Cave. A chthonic – low or on the ground – one with the usual symbols of her torches, keys and perhaps her wheel to represent the life cycle is best. Smoky quartz can be used to activate the entrance.

Offerings: Symbolic gifts to Hekate, her midwives and horde can be made. Place them on your altar. When you enter the Inner Chamber, give them your offerings. I’ve included a list of some offerings in the guide you can access using the link at the end of this article. Feel free to add your own.

Preparing body, mind and soul and space: The same techniques outlined in The Deathwalking Sacrificial Ritual can be used.

Ritual Guidelines

Be as close to the ground as possible during the ritual. Don’t forget your offerings. I recommend creating a protected space, either by circle casting or another technique. If you are feeling disconnected from Hekate, try the Evocation of Hekate Suitable For Any Rite to evoke her presence once you’ve created the contained space. Light the incense or turn on the diffuser about 30 minutes prior to beginning the ritual, before casting your circle. Extinguish it before moving into the incantation/petition.

Once your space is established, concentrate on your Underworld altar. Anoint your feet, heart center and crown with your chosen oil, tapping them three times. Your feet represent your emotional lower self, the black cord extends from them to the altar. The red of your heart center connects to the altar. Finally, the mystical, intellectual energy of the higher self is drawn into the altar when you anoint your crown. Envision the stone or symbol being used to signify the entrance to Hekate’s Cave opening as you pour out your energies. Once you are connected to the opening, extend the merged currents to the cauldron, creating a triangular portal between you, the opening sumbolon and the cauldron. Close your eyes and feel the opening. Leaving your physical body safely behind in the closed space, release your energetic being into the portal. Once inside, follow Hekate’s torches to the inner chamber. Your allies and guides may come forward to support you, and you can certainly evoke them.

You’ll come to an open entrance. Take note of the symbolism here. Hekate often leaves messages on the way we perceive her domain. Observe who is present for your rebirth ritual. New guides, deities, and spirits most likely will present themselves since they know why you are here. They are here to be your midwives, but you do the work. The cauldron will now appear. It’s helpful to read my poem, “Hekate’s Cauldron of Rebirth” a few times before creating your own portal to get into the energy of her cave and cauldron.

When you are ready, climb into the cauldron.

The Cauldron of Rebirth Ritual

Hail Hekate! Mighty Underworld Queen,
I have come to enter your cauldron for rebirth.
I call upon the energy of the dark to protect me,
I draw down the moon for her protection,
I ask my allies and guides to attend this ritual.
I petition you to release your horde,
Extend them around me now.
Surround me with your wise goddesses of rebirth.

I enter into your cauldron of my own free will,
My intention is pure, my will strong, and my heart true.
See yourself climbing into the cauldron.

Through the smoke I am purified,
While the fire burns away all that no longer serves me.
I am washed in the truth of moon essence.
I wash my wounds,
I release the false skin of the past.
I cleanse my tired body,
Stripping away all that no longer serves.
Now all that remains is my soul which is my truth.

Climb out of the cauldron as pure essence, with your discarded former self cast round the cauldron.

Fierce Horde of Hekate,
I offer you all that I have discarded.

The creatures will consume what you have cast off.

Great guides, take the thread of my soul and weave me anew.

Your guides step forward and get to work at this point. Don’t rush through this. Feel the process as you are reborn. Every cell, muscle, organ, hair. All created from your true essence. Allow the process to progress gently, supported by your allies who are weaving your true body. When you are ready, proclaim:

Behold, I am reborn into my truth.

At this point, moonlight will emerge from the cauldron. She will infuse you, creating a robe of pure light and the darkest night. Step forward to Hekate on her throne. She anoints you with the red-fire of her torches, searing you with power. At this point, the three keys will appear in your hand. One for removal magick, one for spirit witchery, and one for the ability to perform transformation. You may also receive other keys, relevant to your witchery. Hekate may speak to you during this process.

I now keep my own keys,
The power to remove all that doesn’t serve.
The ability to call spirits,
The gift of transformative witchcraft.
Opening the gates of the mysteries,
And to the way forward.

Make your offerings that you have brought. Call them into your hands from their place on the altar.

I make these offerings from the deepest gratitude.
To Hekate,
My allies and guides,
And to her Horde.
I go boldly forward into my new life.

Walk through the opening Hekate created, returning to your physical body. Take your time with this process. As you merge, notice the physical sensations. Move slowly upwards from your feet to the crown, disconnecting from the cauldron and your sumbolon for the cave. This dismantles the portal. Reconnect to the mundane world by feeling the floor beneath you, open your heart center to your material surroundings, stretch your crown back up towards the Starry Road. Take time here to balance, making corrections as necessary. Gently, when you are ready, open your space.

Ice Magick is a branch of water Magick that utilizes water in the form of ice to assist and enhance spellwork, and provide another form of energy to manifest a specific, desired result. Ice Magick is similar to water Magick. However with ice Magick, the power of the spell is increased because of the act of freezing the water. When water shape shifts from a constantly moving force to a Solid, its power is the most potent.

Despite being a solid form of water, ice still is fundamentally water, and thus keeps many of the same basic correspondences. However, ice is not associated with all of the same properties as water; it’s mainly used for binding spells and spells that have to do with transformation. Ice is harsh. Ice is cold as stone, and not conductive to life in general. Thus, it’s Magickal properties manifest similarly. The dangerous and unforgiving nature of ice makes it a powerful tool in curses, hexes, protections, bindings, and banishing.

Ice can be used to perform any kind of Magick that induces a change in the spell caster’s inner state, so it can be used to help reveal personal secrets, remember forgotten memories, dispel depression and release stress.

Ice is affiliated with west and is an energy associated with the divine feminine; especially those goddesses who hold dominion over winter such as Skadi and Cailleach in the Norse and Celtic traditions.

Ice Magick is very powerful. It is a neutral, natural force that can be used for positive or negative means. It is therefore important, as it is with any spell, that the caster makes sure of his or her intentions before attempting it.

Remember how beautiful ice can be, as it sends off prisms of light, but also remember that it is very easy to slip on ice. Ice should not be feared any more than wind, rain and storm. The spell caster should approach ice Magick with respect and reverence.

Collecting Ice For Magick

Water used in ice Magick should always be collected from a natural source when possible. Collect icicles or small chunks of ice from outside and bring them inside. They can be stored in your freezer until you’re ready to use them.

If you don’t have ice where you are, make ice cubes out of clean spring water and add them to your spell or Magickal working. Fill a jar with water from a lake, pond, or stream, collect rain water, or collect snow to melt. If none of the above are possible, moon water made from tap water can be used as a substitute.

Also, if safe and possible, try practicing your ice Magick outside in the snow, or cold winter air. In my personal experience, being outside and experiencing winter while performing ice Magick significantly deepens my connection to the spellwork and enhances the energy behind it.

Ice can be melted to make water for use in Magick and spells or added to the altar during a spell.

How Ice Is Used in Magick

The ice you collect or make is used in the following ways:

Freezing water – binding, protection
(if possible, always freeze the water outside in the moonlight, if below freezing and possible, otherwise a freezer will work)

Melting ice – letting go, shedding bad habits

Shattering ice – banishing, breaking a bond

Sigil Crafting With Ice

Ice Magick can be utilized to charge and cast sigils. Here’s how:

If casting a sigil to protect yourself:

Place the sigil in the water and freeze it (either outside or in your freezer). As the ice protects the sigil, so are you protected.

If casting a sigil to help break a bad habit or situation:

Place the sigil at the bottom of a container then place a large piece of ice or a collection of ice cubes on top of it (freeze the water prior to the spell). As the ice melts, so does your habit or situation melt away.

If casting a sigil to break the bond between yourself and a toxic person:

Freeze the sigil in water like you would for a protection or binding, then shatter the ice with as much power as you can muster. As the ice shatters, so does the bond shatter.

If casting a sigil to manifest something in you life:

Place the sigil at the bottom of a container and bury it in snow. As the snow melts and seeps into the sigil, so will what you are manifesting seep into your life.

To cast a protection sigil:

You can also draw protection sigils in the frost with a warm finger on your house and car windows evoking the energy of the ice to bring frosty protection.

Putting Someone On Ice

Putting a dangerous situation, or person”on ice” is a serious form of protection. Though it will not harm anyone, it will prevent them from interfering in your life or causing you harm.

Write the name of the person or short description of the situation on a small piece of paper. Fold the paper up and place it in an ice cube tray, small plastic container, or freezer bag. Fill it with water and place it in the freezer. Do not remove or thaw it until the danger has passed.

Once the danger has passed, the ice cube can be floated down a river (away from you and your home) or buried in a graveyard.

Making Mojo Ice Cubes

Instead of placing the ingredients you would use in a mojo bag, place them in water in an ice tray or small container (if using crystals, make sure the crystal will not be harmed by the water or ice before submerging). If desired, follow the table for assistance in manifesting the desired result

Melt – for letting go.

Shatter – for banishing {though I wouldn’t recommend shattering if crystals are being used}

Leave frozen – for binding and protection.

Ice Cubes for Love

Ice cubes can also be used for love spells. Freeze water with drops of almond, orange, and lemon extract, and add the cubes to a drink. Serve to a reluctant or shy partner.

Put Problems On Hold

Have a problem you want to stall until your ready to deal with it?

Write the name of your problem on a small piece of paper, fold and place the paper in a small container of water (melted snow or spring water). Place the container in your freezer or outside at night (if the temperature will be below freezing all night and all day.)

Keep the paper frozen in the ice until you’re ready to deal with it. Thaw the ice when you are ready to handle and take action.

Icy Divination

The two main practices of ice Magick for divination are utilizing natural ice outdoors or freezing water in a bowl or cauldron.

Natural Ice:

Find a naturally occurring piece of clear ice, the most common being an icicle, and stare deeply into it while clearing your mind. You may see shapes, images, or simply understand concepts regarding what you’re asking or searching for. Remember, dress warmly when venturing outside, and not just for safety in this case. It can be really tricky to relax and concentrate if you are shivering.

Bowl or cauldron:

Fill a bowl (preferably black or dark colored) or cauldron with water and freeze. Scry into the frozen surface as you similarly would with liquid water. Answers may come in images, ideas, or sudden epiphanies. This method can also be used to help communicate with the ice and winter deities.

Scrying Ice:

Symbolically, the surface of a body of water represents the veil between this world and the otherworld. So, when water is frozen, the door to the otherworld is closed. But as ice melts during a ritual, the door re-opens and we can look inside.

The surface of melting ice is shiny, and like any reflective surface, is well suited for scrying. One way to do this is to sit in a dark room with a yellow candle burning off to the side, so that the light of the flame flickers on the melting ice.

Ice scrying requires patience — messages will be revealed slowly, as the ice melts. Ice scrying is especially suited for looking into the past, since the frozen water symbolically represents a frozen moment in time. Looking into past lives is possible, as is looking back and trying to remember a forgotten memory. The melting ice represents the releasing of memories from the subconscious mind.

An Ice Altar

Using a bird bath and filling it with water the night before it is going to freeze and/or snow, is a great way to create a temporary shrine to the Cailleach, to lay out sigils in stone or sticks, or even to simply create an altar where you perform your magic outdoors during the winter months.

Winter Blessing Water

You will need

Snow

Icicle

Silver ring or quartz crystal

Select your sacred vessel or bowl to gather the snow in. Bring it inside and place on your altar. Select an icicle from outdoors and place it in the center of the bowl. If you have a sacred symbol that you use to charge your magic with, use the icicle to draw it into the snow. Add a piece of silver or quartz crystal and set it out under the light of the Full moon. Bottle it and use!

Note: If you live in a tropical area, with no access to snow or icicles, Sea Water or Spring Water can be substituted for snow, and an ice cube can take the place of the icicle.

Ice Magick Basics

Ice spells have two phases, the freezing of the water, and the melting of the ice. In some spells, the caster writes a problem on a piece of paper, immerses the paper in water, and freezes the water to put an end to the problem. Those kinds of spells only use one of the two phases of ice Magick.

It is important to remember, however, that problems that are frozen must eventually come back; everything that is frozen must melt. I have found that it is more practical, and more powerful, to use both phases, freezing and melting, in spells.

The freezing of the ice begins the spell, because the caster is already thinking of the spell, and planning the ritual, when the ice is frozen. The process begins as the water solidifies, and the power is released during the ritual as the ice melts. For this reason, I find it most useful to freeze “special” ice for spells.

Also, most ice trays are made of plastic. Holding the frozen water in non-natural plastic is not as effective; Magick is natural, and should ideally involve natural substances. Metal bowls can be used, but the easiest method is to use cardboard coated with wax (so that the cardboard doesn’t stick to the ice). Small paper drinking cups that are coated with wax are ideal, as are frozen juice containers that have been emptied of their contents and washed.

A piece of ice naturally begins to melt when it is left at room temperature, so it works like the burning of a candle in candle Magick, changing itself during the spell, thus releasing its energy to the goal at hand.

It is extremely powerful to encircle a candle with ice and perform a spell. The ice melts and the candle burns — two elements that work in a cooperative way can produce powerful results. Spells that use fire and ice are wonderful for obtaining balance, since they employ the complimentary elements of fire and water.

Also try putting ice in a bathtub while visualizing. This technique is especially suited for spells involving physical
transformation.

Herbs and oils can also be used to enhance ice Magick. An infusion of one or more herbs can be frozen, or essential oils can be added to the water before freezing. When water is frozen, it combines with the element of air, so herbs and oils that are associated with either element can be used. Herbs that work best are ones that, when growing in the natural world, can endure cold and snow, or require cold weather to germinate.

Below is a list of some herbs and oils that work well for ice Magick:

Aspen – Communication

Pine – Happiness, Exorcism

Rose – Love, Healing, Psychic Power, Luck

Spearmint – Memory

Spikenard – Happiness

Willow – Love, Healing, Divination

Yarrow – Psychic Power, Love, Courage, Exorcism

Precautions:

By using ice Magick, you will not become immune to ice and cold. Please, please take proper precautions when going out in below freezing weather. Wear snow gear when going out in the snow, especially if trying to utilize the energy of a snowstorm. Use gloves when handling snow and ice outside. Remember the element you are dealing with. Ice is incredibly dangerous. Do not risk life and limb to use ice Magick.

Stay indoors during a blizzard, have proper gear and supplies if hiking in the snow, and by the Gods please do not risk gathering water from under a frozen lake or river. Falling in could kill you. Remember the very first thing I said about ice: it’s harsh, cold, dangerous, and unforgiving. It’s just as dangerous for an ice witch as it is for everyone else.
