Harry Potter fans may remember the Fursona of Sirius Black, Padfoot, a large black dog called a "Grim", the nick name is also a name for Black Dog. This Animagus form was inspired by an entity in British, Dutch, Canary, and Catalonian lore commonly called a "Hell Hound". The unfortunate dog in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles was disguised as a hellhound by the story's antagonist.

, Most of these dogs are indifferent, like skriker, not interacting with the witness. Many are homicidal, Like Black Shuck who, in one sighting, killed three people in a church. Less common are the friendly dogs such as the Gurt Dog, who protects children and lone travelers. Other dogs are guardians, such as the Church Grim.
. No one really knows what Black Dogs are for sure. Some say they are ghosts of unbaptized children(Gabriel's hounds), sacrificed dogs(Church Grim), or executed witches. A couple of them my be Fea, like Capelthwaite, who helped the locals and harassed travelers on the land it haunted until banished by a Vicar.
. The description of these dogs varies almost as much as their names. Some just look like giant black dogs with glowing eyes and sulfuric smell, when they're visible. Gabriel's hounds have human heads, Yeth Hounds have no head, Skriker has huge paws, Gytrash can also look like a mule or cow, Capelthwaite looked like whatever it wanted, occasionally they have horns. The glow of their eyes, when they have them, is usually red or green.
. Recently an archaeological dig at a church in East Anglia, a location of a haunting, revealed a grave of a dog. Obviously loved by it's caretaker, the dog was taken care of when it became to arthritic to work and when it died, it was buried with love. This dog was the size of a large great dane, probably making it the largest dog in the area at the time. Archaeologists theorize that this dog may have been the source of the local black dog legend despite not being 7 ft tall, though it was probably only about a foot off when on its hind legs.
