The Crystal Ball

The origin of the crystal ball takes place in Britain, 2000 BC. At that time, Celtic tribes were unified by Druids. Druids were polytheists and revered nature. They had a very important role in these ancient Celtic societies, as they were both priests, philosophers, scientists, teachers, judges, and counselors to the kings. Druids may have been the first people to use crystals in divination.

In the Middle Ages, many diviners and fortune-tellers (seers, wizards, gypsies, sorcerers) started to use crystals to see in the past and predict future, especially in Central Europe.

At first, crystal balls were made of beryl, a naturally transparent gemstone. According to ancient beliefs, this gemstone was supposed to have specific powers. Later, Beryl was replaced by rock crystal which is even more reflective and translucent.

The crystal ball is now only used for magical purposes but was once a household tool. Many used to maximize the light available from a candle by putting it on a ‘candle block’ or ‘flash stool’. An adjustable candlestick was fixed in the middle of a high-legged stool, and around it were placed up to six wooden sockets that held long-necked globes of water, the ‘flashes’ or flasks. These would concentrate the beams of light on to the work.

Objects like this were in widespread use to enable people to work in the darker hours. In a richer household, they might be crystal balls. So the most mystical object of the witch is again only a domestic tool used in a magical way - for scrying.

Candles were also placed in front of mirrors to increase the light available for work. There is something very magical about working a spell in a mirror by candlelight, and many traditional spells use this.

Most people find crystal ball gazing is easiest in a quiet, dimly lit room. Many people like to have candles burning. For some the reflections of the flames help to summon images - others find them a distraction.

Burning incense is common and some people like to have soothing music playing gently in the background.
The important thing to remember is that you are creating an atmosphere. If someone walked in unexpectedly, they should instantly be aware that something significant is taking place.

How to Use
Place the crystal on a table in front of you. Many crystal balls you can buy come with their own stand. If you don't have a stand you might like to use a small cushion or a silk handkerchief purchased and reserved especially for this purpose.

Sit down and relax. Lay your hands gently on the ball for a minute or two in order to energize it and strengthen your psychic rapport. Whilst holding the crystal ball, think about the purpose of this scrying session. If appropriate try to visualize the subject of your question. Some people like to ask the question out loud, others prefer to internalize it.

Now, remove your hands from the crystal. Look into the crystal, stare deeply. Allow your eyes to relax and become slightly unfocussed. After a little while, you should see a mist or smoke forming in the crystal. Let this mist grow and fill the ball, then visualize it gradually clearing to reveal images within the crystal.

The images you see might not be what you expected. Your subconscious mind knows what information you need. Just let the images flow, changing, and taking you wherever they choose to go. Don't try to rationalize now, time for that later.

Once the crystal ball has shown you all the images you need, they will begin to fade. Don't just stop the session suddenly, instead of reverse the process you used at the beginning. Visualize the mists coming back and covering the images, then receding to return the ball to its natural state.
