On December 21, 2020, Saturn and Jupiter will be conjunct in Aquarius, a sign that’s all about humanitarianism, enlightenment, independence, and radical thinking. This shift will bring a huge influx of Aquarian energy into our lives for quite some time. And that’s just the beginning. Could it be the dawning of the Age of Aquarius?

by Astrea Taylor | STARLIGHT WITCH

As an astrologer, I’m always looking to the heavens for more information. I believe the stars emanate subtle energies that affect the planets in their realms, which in turn affect the mindset of most people.

The Age of Aquarius is the name for the approximately 2,000 year astrological cycle that starts a new age on earth. It’s an era of brotherly love, humanitarianism, ideals, peace, visionary spirituality, technology, and science.

What I see happening at the end of 2020 may just be the beginning of the Age of Aquarius.

Here are the Details

On December 17, 2020, Saturn will pass into Aquarius. Saturn is one of the planetary rulers of Aquarius, which will empower this sign. Saturn in Aquarius will be exalted, or in harmony. The lessons that Saturn will teach us in this sign will focus on humanity’s evolution toward equality.

Although Saturn also rules Capricorn, it can be a difficult placement for people, as it incites vast inequalities of wealth and power.

Then, two days after Saturn enters Aquarius, Jupiter will enter Aquarius too. This buoyant planet will imbue us with a feeling of expansion and more energy to think more about humanity than we’ve had in quite some time.

Jupiter was definitely in its detriment as it slogged through Capricorn for the last year–the optimism and generosity usually associated with Jupiter simply couldn’t catch a break.

This is about to change in a major way.

The next notable Aquarian event will occur on Yule on December 21, 2020, when Saturn and Jupiter will be conjunct in Aquarius at 0’28”. The “zero degree” aspect of this conjunction of these two outer planets is very auspicious. It’s often associated with huge new beginnings and expansion. Some astrologers refer to this conjunction point as a “critical degree,” where old things die out and new and positive things come into being.

Jupiter and Saturn conjunct in Aquarius is all about the benefits of creating a new system for all people, not just those with money or power. It also affects us on an individual level, and we will have the opportunity to release old emotional dramas. We can also swap worn-out spiritual methods for more effective ones that make us feel happier and more energetically aligned.

Major Aquarian occurrences:

12/17/20: Saturn –> Aquarius

12/19/20: Jupiter –> Aquarius

12/21/20: Saturn & Jupiter Conjunct at 0 degrees Aquarius

1/17/21: Jupiter Squares Uranus

1/18/21: Uranus goes direct in Taurus

1/21/21: Sun -> Aquarius

1/31/21: Mercury -> Aquarius

2/1/21: Venus -> Aquarius

2/11/21: New Moon in Aquarius

2/17/21: Saturn Squares Uranus

Jupiter will leave Aquarius on December 29, 2021, and Saturn will leave Aquarius on March 7, 2023. During that time, we may experience a pause on the Aquarian progress until Pluto enters Aquarius on March 23, 2023. This is a big shift that will massively transform the power that businesses and governments have into more of a humanitarian focus.

Pluto will retrograde back into Capricorn from June 2023 until January 20, 2024. On that day, it will enter Aquarius and will be conjunct with the sun–at yet another zero degree conjunction.

The Sun and Pluto conjunct in Aquarius is all about the individual self going deeper into their own psyche to face the shadow and see their contribution to the world and how they can help humanity. Pluto will stay in Aquarius for 19 years, until 2043.

Pluto in Aquarius encourages rebellion against tyranny, as everyone can clearly see that the emperor has no clothes. The last time Pluto was in Aquarius, the American and French revolutions were happening. These were movements for the people that upended the powers that be. However, it’s important to note that not all countries experienced this kind of uprising, and America and France may not experience an uprising.

There’s no solid agreement among astrologers about when the Ages begin and end. Some believe they last 2,000 years, and others believe they last longer. There are a few signs that the Age of Aquarius has already started, such as technologies like microwaves, radio waves, airplanes, wifi, cordless charging, and space travel. Successful civil rights movements are another sign of the Age of Aquarius, the era of brotherly love.

If the Age of Aquarius is happening or about to happen at this time, it could bring about visionary strength and progress toward a more humane society. However, it’s also important to note that there are negative aspects of each Age.

Negative aspects of the Age of Aquarius could include the possibility of more and longer-lasting air-related viruses, a warming of the air (due to the contribution of Uranus’ electrical aspect), and more energetic weather such as hurricanes, tornados, storms, and high winds. Sudden changes may also occur due to Aquarius’ planet, Uranus. These sound a lot like the climate change crisis to me, which I see as humanity’s next big project, where many will have to come together to stop the greed of the old ways and to make a lasting change for the good of all people.

The Age of Aquarius marks the end of the Age of Pisces, which was heavily characterized by Christianity–coincidentally, both Pisces and Christianity use the symbol of a fish. The positive aspects of Pisces are love, compassion, spirituality, and enlightenment. At its worst, Pisces can be escapist, addicted, too dreamy, judgmental, and focused on dogmatic spiritual ideals at the cost of everything else, even human lives.

Some astrologers and astronomers believe the Age of Aquarius won’t start for several hundred years. As there’s no hard definition, it’s anyone’s guess.

If the Age of Aquarius doesn’t begin at Yule, the Aquarian energy will start to build up at that time, and it will continue through 2043, until Pluto moves into Pisces.

Whatever happens, I hope we make it through this strange time and that we experience more equality and peace.

We all need that now!

And as to when this all will begin, here it is:

Already this past summer, the two planets were growing closer in the night sky. Later this month, they will appear closer to each other than they have for centuries.

If popular culture has taught us anything about the holidays, it's that this is a season of reunions: a time when people conquer great distances and lengthy separations just to be together again. Usually, though, such stories involve cross-country trips — not the orbits of the two largest planets in our solar system.

This year is different.

On Dec. 21, Jupiter and Saturn — which are actually separated by more than 400 million miles — are expected to appear closer to each other in the night sky than they have for centuries. Seen at the right hour, whether by telescope or the naked eye, the gas giants will be separated by roughly a fifth of the diameter of the typical full moon. At this proximity, the planets will appear to touch or even form one large, brilliant star in the sky.

The spectacle is a curious effect of their orbits. Since Jupiter takes a little less than 12 years to circle the sun and Saturn takes more than 29, the planets appear to earthlings to meet roughly every 20 years, in what astronomers call a "great conjunction." The last great conjunction occurred in May 2000, though its position in the sky at the time meant the average stargazer likely lost it in the glare of the sun.

But you'll need to reach much further into the past to find the last instance such a conjunction was this close and this visible to stargazers. The Perth Observatory in Australia says that Jupiter and Saturn last approached this closely to each other in July 1623, but as with the conjunction in 2000, it was hard to spot.

"You'd have to go all the way back to just before dawn on March 4, 1226, to see a closer alignment between these objects visible in the night sky," Patrick Hartigan, an astronomer at Rice University, explained in a statement last month.

There's still another holiday connection at work here, beyond a simple coincidence of timing. Some astronomers, dating back to Johannes Kepler in the 17th century, have conjectured that the Star of Bethlehem that guided the three wise men to Jesus Christ's birthplace in the Bible was a conjunction like the one set to appear later this month — although likely one involving different planets.

Saturn and Jupiter began appearing close to each other this past summer, but this spectacle of proximity will be clearest beginning in mid-December.

"Look for them low in the southwest in the hour after sunset. And on December 21st, the two giant planets will appear just a tenth of a degree apart — that's about the thickness of a dime held at arm's length!" NASA explained earlier this month. "This means the two planets and their moons will be visible in the same field of view through binoculars or a small telescope. In fact, Saturn will appear as close to Jupiter as some of Jupiter's moons."

After the winter solstice, the two planets will appear to begin moving apart again.

Now, this sentimental holiday reunion is no Hallmark movie; if you miss it this year, don't expect to see it again next December. Astronomers say there won't be another great conjunction this close until 2080.

Jupiter Conjunct Saturn In Aquarius – A New Order

Jupiter Conjunct Saturn In Aquarius – A New Order

Genesis, Tower of Babel: “A united human race speaking a single language comes to the land of Shinar. There they agree to build a tower tall enough to reach heaven. God, observing their plans, confounds their speech so that they can no longer understand each other, and scatters them around the world”.

The much-awaited Jupiter-Saturn conjunction on December 21st, 2020 may well bring us a modern interpretation of the Tower of Babel.

We may not see it yet, but a new order is just around the corner.

And no, that’s not the New World Order carefully crafted in the last decade by Capricorn, top-down hierarchical structures.

Since the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction occurs exactly at 0° Aquarius, this new order is nothing like we expect it to be. It is truly “Aquarius”: innovative, people-oriented, bottom-up, and YES, different.

There is a reason why in the Tower of Babel, God interrupted peoples’ plan to reach the heavens: that reason is hubris.

No one and nothing can be God (or the Universe, or however you prefer to call this Divine Design). When we want to be as powerful as God (or the Universe) we collapse just like the Tower of Babel did.

There is a limit to how far a top-down structure can go. Just like any big empire or organization collapses sooner or later, top-down structures eventually outlive their purpose and become corrupted.

The truth is, nature is simply too complex to be governed by a one-size-fits-all type of structure.

Of course, there are times in the development of consciousness when we need Capricorn’s rules and order. Capricorn follows Sagittarius. Sagittarius sets the vision, but lacks the resources and discipline to turn this vision into a reality.

And here is where we need Capricorn. Capricorn, through planning, structure and a good understanding of the natural laws, has the power to transform Sagittarius’ vision into reality.

However, it comes at a time when this Capricorn structure has become too rigid, too outdated, and stops serving its initial purpose.

When this happens, we need to re-think it, re-engineer it, and if it is rotten beyond repair, to start things all over again.

It’s interesting that Jupiter has been chasing Saturn all year, but has not managed to catch up with it. Jupiter and Saturn’s Capricorn agenda will not get the chance to materialize. While in Capricorn, both Jupiter and Saturn met Pluto instead. Talk about a change of plans!

When a planet – any planet – has a randez-vous with Pluto, you can bet that they will not have any chance of influencing Pluto.

It is exactly the other way around. Pluto influences them – and Pluto is known for stripping down anything that is weak, corrupted, and can no longer sustain life.

Set free from Pluto’s purgatory, Jupiter and Saturn are now ready to build something that is a reflection of their best qualities – something that is truly sustainable.

If you’ve looked in the night sky in the last months, you may have seen Jupiter and Saturn, getting closer and closer together. In December, they are less than 1° away from each other.

And just when Jupiter is about to catch Saturn, Saturn leaves Capricorn and slips into Aquarius, on December 17th, .... Jupiter follows suit 2 days later, and finally on December 21st, 2020, the two meet in an epochal conjunction at 0° Aquarius.

Will Jupiter conjunct Saturn bring a reorganization of existing structures, or a complete reset of the system?

Time will tell.

Don’t expect everything to change in a blink of an eye on December 21st, 2020. Jupiter and Saturn are not Uranus or Pluto. They will not turn our lives upside down (Uranus) nor will mercilessly wipe everything out (Pluto).

Jupiter And Saturn – The Architects Of Our Solar System

Jupiter and Saturn are pretty much ‘in your face’, ‘what you see is what you get’, type of influence.

Jupiter comes with the vision. Saturn with the implementation. Together, they are the architects of our solar system.

When they join forces, they create a structure that has coherence (Jupiter) and that is built to last (Saturn).

And while Jupiter and Saturn are great architects… in Aquarius, they will build a different type of structure.

Capricorn is a Cardinal, Earth sign. Capricorn is associated with the Midheaven, the highest point in the sky. What kind of structure would Jupiter and Saturn build together in Capricorn? A Tower of Babel-like structure.

And what kind of structure would Jupiter and Saturn build in Aquarius? To answer this question, let’s remember what Aquarius stands for.

Aquarius – World Wide Web

The Aquarius glyph is two electromagnetic waves, a symbol for information that comes not from within ourselves (Gemini), nor from other people (Libra), but from the higher mind of the Universe.

If the previous sign, Capricorn, is concerned with bringing a concrete, material plan to execution, Aquarius is about coming with a new vision, with a new architecture – something that is not based on Capricorn’s material realities, but inspired by the Universe itself.

Aquarius is ruled by both Saturn and Uranus. Saturn and Uranus couldn’t be more different, and we find this paradox in the underlying nature of Aquarius. Aquarius is a Fixed sign that loves structure.

However, Aquarius is also an Air sign that loves to connect people and ideas. When we combine “Fixed” with “Air” we get invisible ties, which are a metaphor for friendship and strong, yet flexible connections and structures.

The internet itself or the world wide web is nothing but an invisible network of information. Both the internet and Social Media are linked to Aquarius. Social (Air) + Media (Uranus).

Saturn is the Earth. Uranus is the sky. Uranus’ impulse comes from the sky, and while it may seem sudden, while it may feel like it’s the workings of fate, it makes just as much sense as Saturn’s insight, which is rooted in the intelligence of nature.

However, to tap into Uranus’ intelligence, we need to tap into our intuition. Sometimes, the essential is indeed invisible to the eye.

If you want to understand how Aquarius builds structures look at spiders. Unlike top-down, pyramidal structures that serve a predetermined goal, a spider’s web develops organically and takes into account its environment.

The spider starts with small spreads, it seeks opportunities, and finds the most natural way to move forward. The result? An organic, flexible, yet durable structure.

Jupiter Conjunct Saturn In Aquarius – Co-Creation With The Universe

In the Age of Aquarius, top-down systems cannot succeed because this is not how Aquarius works.

Aquarius recognizes the uniqueness of the individual (Leo, the opposite sign) and brings together these unique talents and gifts to create something that is greater than the sum of its parts.

The Aquarius agenda that eventually emerges is not the result of one individual, but the sum of individuals.

With Aquarius, we cannot have predetermined goals or top-down agendas; with Aquarius, the outcome emerges from the inside out. The Aquarius agenda is ever-evolving, because we people are ever-evolving.

With Aquarius, we don’t know what the future will bring, and that is a good thing. Knowing what the future will bring means stagnation.

However in a conversations with some of the Mayan elders about the 2012 prediction. They said that the true wisdom keepers of their nation had been killed off by the Spaniards hundreds of years ago and that 2012 was based on what the succeeding generation of Elders could determine.
But what if Stephen Hawking was right?? What does that mean for us in 2020? Well it sure appears as though the world we inhabit is teetering on something. The Mystics say that the Earth is a school for us to learn to work with energy, emotions and free will. It appears there is more opportunity in 2020 than we realize. Are we birthing something new as we watch our world crumble?

Energy is contagious whether it be negative or positive. The only way we will make a shift to a higher consciousness is by taking personal responsibility for our healing, releasing misguided beliefs that keep us bound in shame, guilt or powerlessness. The most challenging issue we seem to be working on now is to fully embody our light, wisdom and purpose. The ego would have it otherwise.

YOU are essential to this shift in consciousness if it is to occur it requires each of us.

In yoga philosophy these transits are called the yugas.

The New Moon is an ideal time for seeking Hekate’s support for new projects, renewal and rebirth. Known as Noumenia to the ancients, the night when the first sliver appears in the sky, provides the energy for setting intentions for what we hope to grow in the month ahead. Using specific Hekatean energy currents, we can further enhance the magick of beginning anew.

Hekate and the Moon

Hekate’s association with the moon is as strong as it is ancient. In contemporary practice, Hekate is often seen as a Moon Goddess. This perspective is the result of a long evolution of the association between the moon, witchcraft and Hekate.

To the ancient Greeks, Hekate was connected with the moon through her interpretation as a Goddess of the Under World. Her role as a Night Wandering Goddess further reinforced her connection to the moon as evidenced through the myth of her and her horde (of hounds, goblins, etc.) scouring the darkness for either unsuspecting souls or as a protectress. She may have also been on the prowl for the restless dead. Whatever works for you. Hekate’s connection with the night and the moon, as you can see from this one example is as complex (and often times seemingly contradictory) as the rest of her history. If you’re curious to learn more about Hekate as a Goddess of the Moon, I’ve written an introduction that you can read here.

Hekate’s Modern Witchcraft and the Lunar Cycle

The Modern Hekatean Witchcraft model of the lunar cycle includes five distinct phases:

The Dark Moon

The New Moon

The Waxing Moon

The Full Moon

The Waning Moon

I’ve written about the Dark Moon, a time when many contemporary devotees honor Hekate through various acts including rituals. The waxing, full and waning moon energies are utilized in much the same way as most contemporary lunar witchery. The waxing is for attraction magick, the full is great for any sort of spell, and the waning is for removal workings. My take on the New Moon and Hekate’s modern witchcraft is an application of the ancient texts to my contemporary point of view.

Not a Reconstructionist Approach

I don’t try to recreate the religious practices of the Ancient Greeks in general, nor as they specifically relate to Hekate. If you are interested in that approach (which I am not judging in any way), I recommend you read this most excellent blog, Baring the Aegis. What I do is to adapt the spirit of ancient practices to contemporary life. Before I get into my approach to what’s known as Noumenia, here’s a link to a great blog by one of my Patheos Pagan colleagues on a reconstructionist approach to this day.

As with many things associated with Hekate, sorting out the difference between honoring her on the Dark Moon and the New Moon is a bit tricky. While there are reconstructionists who are more than happy to tell you the difference, along with precisely what to do, whatever they say is an interpretation no different in spirit than my approach. We weren’t in the ancient Mediterranean watching what was actually being done. There’s no videos or voice recordings showing us how to do rituals, or even know to pronounce Hekate’s name (though the “H” was definitely maybe silent). Very few of the reconstructionists I’ve encountered actually read the ancient texts, such as Hesiod’s Theogeny, directly from the source. Like me, they rely on translations done by others.

Ancient Practices on the Dark Moon and the New Moon

Based on the works I’ve read, it seems that the Dark Moon and the New Moon were probably two different celebrations. Honoring Hekate on the Dark Moon, known as the Deipnon, was traditionally practiced as a day to seek Hekate’s favor in her form as a Goddess of the Under World. The mythology is that Hekate roamed the night with her horde, including very cool hobgoblins, looking for victims. For the ancients, performing a ritual on the Dark Moon was the equivalent of buying life insurance. The contemporary practice of the Deipnon by devotees has shifted away from this mindset towards expressing gratitude to Hekate, even among reconstructionists. I’ve written previously about my own Dark Moon approach.

Part of the ancient practice of the Deipnon included leaving out a supper for Hekate, including the remnants of animal sacrifices made in her name. The idea was to make a ritual sacrifice seeking her favor and to add the boost of offering up the leftovers. Regarding the New Moon, Noumenia, it may have been a time to seek her blessing over the home for the month ahead. These events are slightly different interpretations of the same thing. The timing of these activities is also rather intricate. Deipnon could have been practiced after sundown on the day when the astrological new moon occurred. Noumenia may have been observed when the first sliver of the new moon appeared.

A Modern Approach to Noumenia

I observe Deipnon and Noumenia as separate events with very different approaches. I set aside the Dark Moon as a time for honoring Hekate. This usually takes the form of expressing gratitude for her many blessings. On the New Moon (when that first sliver appears), I focus on my own goals for the month ahead and seek her support for them. This often includes intention setting. One of my personal practices is to write what I call an intentional prayer, basically a spell without any props. You can think of it as an incantation if the word “prayer” leaves a funny taste in your mouth.

New Moon Practice

My New Moon practice is to get things started for the month ahead, with an actual spell set later in the phase and scheduled according to my focus. This is the day when I sow the seeds of what I am manifesting in the month ahead. If I am planning on attracting something, then I’ll do a spell during the waxing moon since this is a great time for attraction magick of all sorts, including abundance, growth and healing. A full moon working is one that combines both attraction and removal (e.g., reversal, protection, binding) elements. Then a waning one is exclusively for removal.

Writing a New Moon Petition to Hekate

Like with any intention, being specific is the key to success. Take time to develop a word web around your manifesting goal, identifying potential challenges and requirements of success.

Using Specific Hekatean Currents

If you are going to be doing a Noumenia working, there are specific characteristics of Hekate that are highly suitable for starting a new project or rebirth in general. Think of these epithets are energetic currents. One epithet from the Greek Magical Papyri, Nyssa, is literally interpreted as “beginnings.” Hekate as Ergatis is the Energizer. More common ones include torch bearing epithets like Lampidios and Dadouchos. These are especially useful if we are petitioning her to light the way for us – energy for showing us the direction to go in and for removing obstacles. Kyria, meaning powerful, is useful when we are summoning our own inner strength. Hegemonen (Guide), Kleidoukhos (Keeper of the Keys) and Propylaia (Gate Keeper) are excellent energy currents to connect with when starting anew.

Given that Hekate is often viewed as a Triple Goddess, using three different epithets that are directly connected to my intention is a technique that I have found to be very effective. Here’s an example of an intentional prayer (or incantation) petitioning Hekate’s favor using the Key Holder, Torch Bearer and Gate Keeper epithets. You can write your intention as “the key of _________.” For example, if you are seeking a new job, then it would be the “key of a rewarding career paying significantly more than what I earn now.”

Hail Hekate, She who holds the Keys.
Hail Hekate, She who lights the World.
Hail Hekate, She who stands at the Gate.

I stand before you, seeking the key of ________________
Grant this key to me, Mistress.
Shine your light on the path ahead,
Open the gate for me.

May I be brave enough to take up the key.
May I be committed enough to do the required work.
May I be strong enough to overcome all obstacles.

Hail Hekate, She who holds the Keys.
Hail Hekate, She who lights the World.
Hail Hekate, She who stands at the Gate.

I would follow up this petition with a detailed plan of how I am going to manifest this new “key,” and then get busy manifesting it.

However you choose to interpret Hekate and the New Moon, I wish you the magick of renewal and rebirth.

In this article, I offer some recommendations including a list of correspondences and offerings appropriate for honoring Hekate at the Dark Moon or anytime.

There is no definitive “how-to” concerning honoring Hekate during the Dark Moon (or any other time). The answers for questions about honoring Hekate can’t necessarily be found in any book, although historical and contemporary writings about her can shine a light on how we should approach our rituals.

Honoring Hekate is an Intimate Experience

I typically honor Hekate with a pilgrimage to High Head, a stunning granite outcropping near my home on the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia. This is a contemplative ritual including prayers to Hekate and connecting to certain epithets. This is my time to enter into a state of grace and wonder for all of creation. I see Hekate as the energy that fuels all living things. My idea is entirely personal, but since I had this notion I’ve discovered that others in modern times also see her this way and that The Chaldean Oracles provide a historical context for my intimate practice.

Honoring Hekate on the Dark Moon or any time can (and should) be a very intimate experience, reflecting your personal understanding of her. Including elements based on the historical practices can be a very meaningful way of expressing your feelings for Hekate.

Deipnon Preparation: Focus and Planning

Deciding what to focus on for the Deipnon (or any) ritual is a personal process. Hekate’s three formed nature is a context for situating my devotional acts that I often use. This can include honoring her Under World, Middle World and Upper World roles which correspond to my three selves and their primary energies of feelings, actions and thoughts.

If you want to adapt this approach, you can select epithets that match her roles and are especially meaningful to you. You can write the epithets on black, red and white paper. Contemplate their meaning as you place them on the altar. If you are so inclined, you can write a hymn reflecting your chosen epithets.

You can also recite historical hymns to Hekate, including the popular Orphic Hymn:

Other considerations for Deipnon preparations include constructing (or adapting) your altar, choosing correspondences and selecting offerings.

The Deipnon Altar

A Deipnon altar can consist of an image of Hekate, her symbols and certain correspondences that are added to help attune yourself and space to hers. You can read my recommendations for setting up altars and shrines involving Hekate in this article. New statues or objects should be consecrated prior to including in the altar. A simple technique is to anoint the object with an oil or potion consisting of botanicals from Hekate’s Garden, such as almond oil or a decoction (potion) made from her sacred plants. Concentrate on removing all nonessential energy from the object while preparing the object. The table below lists many of the historical and contemporary correspondences of Hekate. You can select different ones that are aligned with your focus to augment your ritual.

I typically clean my altar and add offerings on the Dark Moon. The number three, like the colors of black, red and white can be incorporated. For this Deipnon altar, I made a tripod from poplar (associated with the Under World) and then hung charms on it (a coyote jaw bone, keys, etc.) and then placed offerings (garlic, etc.) on a Hekate’s Wheel to make a complete interior crossroads energetic space. You can also use dirt from a three way crossroads as part of your altar.

Offerings

Traditional offerings often included the leftovers from ritual sacrifice, as well as a special supper left at the crossroads. This meal may have included cakes, meat and libations. I’m on the side that offerings should be of great meaning to the person presenting them, reflecting the spirit of the ancients’ practice rather than the content.

Although the ways I honor Hekate are both personal and contemporary, I am a true descendant of the ancient witches who called upon her through out shared focus on botanicals. I’ve included just a few plants from Hekate’s Garden in the above table, along with a few mentions of ways you can incorporate them into your Dark Moon ritual. If you’re interested in herbal magick, you’ll find more on the Keeping Her Keys Facebook page.

Other Preparation Activities

Other preparation considerations include the location and timing. If you’re going to an actual crossroads, consider the various aspects of doing this well in advance. For example, if there are animals in the area that may eat the offerings you don’t want to leave things that could poison them. Remember that a three way crossroads can be the joining of roads, paths or the nexus of land, sea and sky (which is my usual location). This is especially relevant as Hekate has dominion over these physical representations of the three energetic realms.

You can also plan what you’ll wear and the ingredients you’ll need for the cleansing process in the following section. Music is often a component of my rituals. I recommend checking out Byron Metcalf’s amazing drumming, in addition to the tunes about Hekate that you can find on my YouTube playlist. In addition, you’ll want to plan the method you’ll use for creating sacred space.

Purification

Purification was, and is, an important part of a Dark Moon ritual to Hekate, both of the home and the individual. Part of ancient ceremonies that I find particularly fascinating is the practice of touching the animal (often a dog) that would be sacrificed. The idea was that energetic dirt would be transferred to the animal. Once it was slain, that bad energy would be completely removed from the individual and their home. In addition, the remains of the sacrifice were also included as an offering to Hekate. Getting rid of bad energy – part of miasma in their ancient mindset – was a major component of religious activity. The foundation of the contemporary practice of offering Hekate leftovers on the Deipnon probably grew out of this historical one, as did the ritual home cleansing (along with the altar).

Cleansing the Body

Many followers purify their body prior to a Dark Moon ritual with a similar focus as those ancients transferring their bad energy onto the “scapegoat” (or “scapedog” in this instance). Ritual bathing using incenses and infusions in the water that will both attune and purify our energies prior to a working are part of the purifying process. There are many plants in Hekate’s Garden from which we can create incenses and infusions. Frankincense is one of my favorites as is a potion made from mugwort, lavender and rosemary added to the bath. Steep about 1 tbsp of mugwort with 1/2 tsp rosemary and lavender in two cups of boiling water for twenty minutes, then add to the running water in your bath. (You can strain this if you don’t like bits of things in the water.)

Preparing the Mind

A ritual bath helps to cleanse both the body and mind. Personally, I try to enter what I call a “state of grace” the day I am doing a ritual honoring Hekate by purifying my thoughts (as much as possible) through not complaining, focusing on the good and avoiding interactions that are likely to interfere with my desired mindset. Some devotees “go dark” prior to Deipnon rituals to help cleanse their thoughts and feelings. Deipnon is a state of being much more than it is offerings and words. Meditation can help to create a beneficial mindset and to focus your attention. If I had to give an order of preparation activities, I would put meditation after purification. I think the two are part of the same process of energetic preparation.

Preparing the Body

I also eat light and minimize consumption of things that alter my psycho-spiritual-biological state. For example, I try to avoid caffeine which doesn’t always work that well. The idea is that purification requires effort. These activities help us enter in the state of grace I talked about earlier. Maybe it’s the lack of caffeine and sugar that makes me feel light headed and otherworldly. Others choose to completely fast on the day of the Deipnon.

Performing the Ritual

Creating sacred space is in one sense an extension of the purification process, but it’s also the time we invite Hekate’s attention to our ritual. This is accomplished through using her epithets, reciting a hymn or prayer or doing an evocation. That evocation I wrote has been used by hundreds over the years as a devotional ritual. It’s highly suited for your Dark Moon working. Maybe it will inspire you to write your own. Feel free to adapt it and use it as you feel led.

Creating Sacred Space: Circle Casting

I am a committed circle caster, so I always do this before I launch into energetically calling upon Hekate. There are many ways to cast a circle. The energetic theme is to cast out all that doesn’t serve the ritual ahead and to call in what does, in this case it’s Hekate. The practitioner’s mental focus is all important in the creation of the circle. I’ve written about creating sacred space for Hekate here and you can read my technique for casting Hekate’s Wheel in this article.

Once the sacred space is created, then you can recite your selected text and make your offerings at the altar. If you are taking your offerings to a crossroads, but doing the ritual at the altar, you can remain in the circle while doing so. Envision the energetic barrier travelling with you. Once all parts of the ritual are complete, open you space and always process the experience through writing or art.

Magick on the Dark Moon

I want to briefly mention magick on the Dark Moon before ending this article. I rarely do witchcraft on the Deipnon, although there is nothing wrong with doing so. Some followers do healing rituals on the Dark Moon as well. If you do magick during this time, I recommend that you also perform a ritual honoring Hekate.

Dark Moon Blessings

I love that thousands of practitioners from diverse perspectives all come together to honor Hekate on the Dark Moon. While we all have our personal understanding of Hekate (which can be strikingly different), we are united in our practice of performing rituals on this day. However you choose to honor Hekate on the Deipnon, I wish her blessings for you.

After its discovery in 1930, Pluto enjoyed its official rank as the ninth planet in the Solar System. That was until 2006 when the International Astronomical Union decided to demote Pluto. Sadly, the Solar System lost one of its members, as Pluto is now classified as a dwarf planet.

There have been controversies about Pluto's planet disqualification. This triggered long debates, caused confusion, and generated a pop cultural issue in social media. Some notable scientists protested Pluto’s downgrade with strong arguments. Even lay people came out to show their support for maintaining Pluto’s planet status.

But just because Pluto is a dwarf planet does not mean the scientific research stops. In addition, like any other heavenly body in the Solar System, Pluto has many interesting details that make it different from others. Here are four interesting things about it that you might not have known.

Here on Earth, we say that time flies. Today, we enjoy the summer, and then it is Christmas; however, not on Pluto. One year on Pluto is equivalent to 248 Earth years. A day on Pluto is equal to 153 hours or six days on Earth. A few months mean years of life on Earth.

If you want to keep a long-distance relationship, Pluto is not the place to live. Sending a message from there would take 4.5 hours before it reaches Earth. The exact amount of time for the message to reach its recipient is also dependent on Pluto’s travel year to its orbit. On its journey, when Pluto is closest to Earth, the message sent will reach Earth in about four hours. On its farthest orbital point, it takes 6.5 hours for the message to be received. We are fortunate to keep our loved ones right next to us. At least for now, Pluto is not yet an option for migration.

Pluto seems to have a twin

It is not an identical twin per se, but Pluto appears to have a double named Charon, discovered by astronomer James Christy in 1978. It is not actually a planet, but it is the largest of Pluto’s moons.

Unlike the Earth’s moon, Charon’s orbit positions itself in the same spot where Pluto is—it never rises, never sets, and one side faces Pluto at all times. Scientists call this alignment tidal locking. From this double planetary positioning, a Pluto-Charon system was born. Charon is not the identical twin type, but it almost fits the qualities of a double.

Pluto spews fountains of water

A recent discovery made by NASA’s New Horizons suggests that Pluto may be hiding an ocean of water beneath its icy surface. It is a real mystery how Pluto got its surface to spew fountains of water, but scientists have their explanations.

The ammonia-rich water-ice found in a large crack of Pluto’s crust could be the result of geological movement deep within the depths of the dwarf planet. This crack is believed to be a fissure from which liquid water once erupted during cryovolcanic activity. The presence of ammonia on its surface may prove that those icy volcanoes may have blown off organic water into space.

Despite the frozen state of Pluto’s crust, how did water exist? According to scientist Steven Desch, it was because of the presence of ammonia. Ammonia is an excellent antifreeze that lowers water’s freezing point by 100 degrees Celsius. He believes that if Pluto’s subsurface ocean contains ammonia, that explains how the water maintains its liquid form. Pluto may not be just a frozen place after all!

If you are a big fan of Disney cartoons and trivia, you will love this. Pluto made his appearance as Mickey’s faithful dog in 1930. Science and media converged, as Mickey Mouse’s pet, Pluto the bloodhound, was born within months of the planetary discovery by Clyde Tombaugh.

There was speculation that Walt Disney used the name as a marketing strategy since Pluto, the planet, captured the attention of the masses and was very popular at the time. Whatever the reason, both share the Greek name of the god of the underworld, also called Hades.

Pluto may have lost its brand as a planet but not its legacy in the field of science. There is much to learn about Pluto and scientific work to be completed in the future. Though small in appearance, Pluto has many surprises that await discovery.
