The Latest Science

In March of 2013, Giulio Fanti, a professor of mechanical and thermal measurement at the University of Padua, in Italy, published his findings that the shroud dates from 280 BC (or BCE) to 220 AD (or CE)… the time of Jesus. Fanti’s research included 3 new tests (two chemical, and one mechanical). The first two were carried out with an FT-IR system using infrared light, and the other using Raman spectroscopy. The third was a multi-parametric mechanical test based on 5 different mechanical parameters.  

Carbon Dating Errors

The 1988 C14 tests, which dated the shroud to 1260-1390 AD (CE), were found to have been taken from a repaired area of the cloth. The movie “Night of the Shroud” exposes these flaws. 

Early Science -

- On May 28, 1898, Secondo Pia photographed the shroud, discovering that the negative revealed a positive image (as shown).

- In 1978, the Vatican allowed a team of 30 scientists, led by Dr. John Jackson, to visit Turin, Italy, and conduct tests on the Shroud.  The project became known as the “Shroud of Turin Research Project” or “STURP”. The team concluded that the cloth is authentic.  Since then, no one has secured such full access to the shroud, which is today the most studied artifact in the world. After hundreds of thousands of hours of research, scientists are unsure of how the body image got onto the cloth. Scientists found no paint on the cloth.

By Observation -

    -  The Shroud is made strictly of linen

    -  It has a 3-over-1 herring-bone weave

    - Scorches from fires in 1532 and 1997

    - Water stains

    - Human blood (type AB)

    -  Shadow-like image of a man, (front and

             back) the coloring of which only

            penetrates the cloth to one-tenth the

            diameter of a human hair.

Injuries consistent with the biblical account of the crucifixion…

    - Blood stains on the wrist and feet where

            nails attached the body to the cross

    - Blood stain on 5th rib matching the shape of    

            the Roman lancia.

    - Blood streaks all over the body matching    

            the shape of the Roman flagrum

- The shroud measures 2 Hebrew cubits by 8 Hebrew cubits (roughly 41 inches by 14 feet). 

- 3-D information has been taken from the image, as seen in History Channel’s “The Real Face of Jesus”.

Invisible on the cloth are…

    - Pollen from plants, specific to Jerusalem,             Israel, and the Middle East.  Pollen near          the head is from a thorny plant,    consistent with the crown of thorns.  

    - Limestone on the feet unique to Jerusalem

    - On the negative image, close-ups of the  

            fingers and mouth reveal X-Ray images

            of bones and teeth.

In History -

- John 20:3-9 speaks of the linen wrappings.

- Eusebius wrote of King Abgar of Edessa, in Turkey, who requested Jesus to come heal him.  A disciple was sent instead and probably presented the Shroud to Abgar, who was healed.   The shroud became known as the “Image of Edessa” or the “Mandylion”, and Edessa became the center of Christianity in Turkey.  

- In 593, Evagrius Scholasticus writes that an image not made by human hands, given to King Abgar, was used to repel the Persian army of Chosroes I when he attacked Edessa.

- In 1203 a knight, Robert De Clari of Picardy, France, wrote of seeing the burial cloth of Jesus raised up every Friday during a church service in Constantinople (now Istanbul, Turkey). A year later, crusaders sacked Constantinople, taking many religious items to France.

- In 1355, the cloth became known as “the Shroud”, and was shown at royal weddings and public exhibitions.

- The shroud was on display before the black death plague of Europe, before Guttenberg invented the printing press, before Columbus discovered America, and before the birth of Leonardo DaVinci.

- At least 15 documents tell of the Shroud between 944 and 1203.

In Art -

- A 7^th-century painting in Saint Catherine’s Monastery depicts a disciple presenting a cloth with Jesus’ image to King Abgar.

- In 1192, an artist’s drawing in the Hungarian Pray Manuscript shows Jesus’ burial cloths with a herring-bone weave and “L”-shaped holes.

- Medieval artists most likely used the shroud as a template for icons (example: 6^th-century Pantocrator)

A 13th Century Artistic Forgery?

- Scientists found no paint on the cloth.

- Comparing the shroud to 13th century art reveals unique details never used by artists (the image is fully nude with no loin cloth, it has both front and back body image, and the nails are in the wrists rather than in the palms).

- The shroud reveals advanced forensic information unknown to 13^th-century artists. 

In the Bible -

Peter therefore went out, and the other disciple, and were going to the tomb.  So they both ran together, and the other disciple outran Peter and came to the tomb first.  And he, stooping down and looking in, saw the linen cloths lying there; yet he did not go in.  Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb; and he saw the linen cloths lying there, and the handkerchief that had been around His head, not lying with the linen cloths, but folded together in a place by itself.  Then the other disciple, who came to the tomb first, went in also; and he saw and believed.  For as yet they did not know the Scripture, that He must rise again from the dead.   John 20:3-9 

Jesus offers us eternal life

- “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.  Romans 10:8-10 

If Jesus was the Messiah, why did He die?

- Isaiah 53 states the Messiah would offer his life as a sacrifice for sin.  He gave His life as a ransom for us… because He loves us.  Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.  John 15:13   You can have a personal relationship with the living Jesus, who loves you.  Pray for forgiveness of your sins, ask Him to be your Savior, and invite His Holy Spirit into your heart.
