Nightmare at 3am

No one knew how she was stabbed. Time of death was ruled at 3:00 am. The detective couldn't find anything out of place...no sign of forced entry...no evidence of any one else even being there except for the small bloody knife found left on the kitchen table.

     Funny though....she was a collector of dolls...a bit of an eccentric sort her neighbor said. How did that one old lady put it?

"She would always order these dolls from the internet. Almost every day the Fed-Ex guy would visit her with at least 5 boxes in his arms for her. I don't know why anyone would ever want that many dolls....and especially at her age ! She should've just settled down with someone by now. I was married by 19, you know!"

     But to use a knife that size....what was the measurement...an inch long ?!?! Who uses a tiny knife like that to cut someone's jugular vein? If I was to kill someone like that, I would've at least made sure the knife was a lot bigger than that!

     Weird that house ! I mean to collect dolls is one thing, but to have all that spooky stuff lying around, like that dummy head and hands in her sink! You have to twist the nose to make the water flow out of her eyes like a fountain! And the rest of the house....a regular freak show in every room...coffin for a bed and all ! Who ever killed this woman must have wanted her to die as strangely as she lived....

...but there's no evidence anywhere? Where did the perpetrator go? How did he get in?

     "Hey Joey...where did ya put those shots of the scene again? I have a feeling we're overlooking something?"

     "Right here, Frank. But I'm telling ya...I've looked over these about a hundred times and I don't see nuth'n. Just look at the this bathroom...IT'S SPOTLESS ! The woman's throat was cut...there should be blood everywhere...but she was dryer than a Sunday morn in the Bible belt of Kentucky ! If she didn't have that little cut on her neck, we never would have guessed the cause of death. It's just impossible ! Who cleans the bathroom and the victim of all the blood and then just leaves the body to be found anyway? I've done did this for 30 years, Frank, ain't no one that smart and stupid at the same time!"

     "Well he isn't that stupid, Joey....we still don't have our murderer...and probably never will ! There wasn't a speck of hair, blood, fingerprints, or jack-shit there for the recovery team to bag and tag. I give up ! We're gonna have to bury this case for awhile and get going on that other new case Sarge wants us to get our hands in. Seems another doll collector was found not too far from here with a bullet shot through the eardrum, straight to the brain! The piece must have been a miniature pistol for a doll. What the hell is going on around here? We got a serial doll collector killer on the loose with a sick mind to kill his victims with their collections or something?"

     "I don't know, Frankie.... maybe...or maybe the dolls got pissed off with their owners for not playing with them enough? Oh to hell with it....come on! Before we go over there I gotta pick up a birthday present for Sarah. It's her birthday tomorrow and I just remembered after looking at this teddy bear from the photos."

     "Teddy bear? I don't remember forensics saying anything about a teddy bear being there?"

     "Well there's a photo here of one when they shot the slides after arriving. Strange. I bet someone lifted it as a gift for their kid...damn vultures. They're always doin' that ! I hope they choke on 'em! C'mon...we better get to the store before it closes...or Sarah's gonna choke me if I don't get her a present...I'm already late for the party!"
