Dark Moon Magic

The Dark Moon is when the moon is not visible in the sky at all. Some Witches use this phase as a period of rest. They find it useful for regeneration and relaxation. Others prefer to use it for meditation, psychic power enhancement, or for delving into past life memories to help them better understand current difficulties or to seek an awareness of their inner self.

In dark moon magic, the presiding deities are the Crone and the Sage. Both deities symbolize advancing age and the wisdom that accrues with the passage of time. The Crone is the image of a woman beyond child-bearing years, and similarly, the Sage represents men who have moved from a focus on their life of outward movement and achievement to a focus on their inner wisdom.

Dark moon energy also lends itself to divination and matters where truth is an issue. Very potent for prophecy work, The Dark Moon is also for exploring our darkest recesses and understanding our anger and passions. The Dark Moon is a time for looking inward.

It is about finding what lies inside of you and realizing what you do and do not like about yourself. Use it for learning about yourself, understanding the negative things that you may find.

The Black or Dark Moon is also the most auspicious time for Binding spells, banishing, and neutralizing spells. The dark moon is a time for dealing with attackers. It is also a time for bringing justice to bear and a time for healing and psychic spells.

Black Candle Magic by Barbara Morris
The black candle is very powerful. It is one of the most protective colors. It can be used to bring a person back down to earth. It can also be used in various ways to uncover secrets. It can be used in meditation, to help us find the light within the dark. It stabilizes and awakens greater responsibility. It is most effective when burnt with a white candle. Dark Goddess Hecate
"The Earth began to bellow, trees to dance
And howling dogs in glimmering light advance
Ere Hecate came."

Dark Pagan Rede

For those who walk a shadowed path for whatever reason
because it is a path in your soul that calls to you, a particular
goddess of dark paganism that calls to you or who you are,
Trust your heart and follow what it speaks, as it will never be wrong.

We are Witches, We Are Ancients
Those that stand out among shadows
We are weavers, healers and shamans, and warriors
Judge and Jury
And This is our Creed.

Do not Offend, But Defend
Give your kin a house if they have no home
Remember in all forms are we the goddesses children in one way or another
She is the weaver, the threader, and the cutter of Life
No matter what name she is called, she is the great mother, The All, The
Source

Know the Great dance and the Spiral is never-ending and your day's
walk long, and most often someone will try and break your paths
But when the wolves tear at your heels, remember only the hardest
paths are the paths worth walking.

Life will not be without troubles, fights, hardships
And we are not witches to get nor gain
For that is but an empty path that leads to greed and the ruin of your soul.

We are the witches, singers, shamans, dreamers, weavers, healers and
warriors of the wild winds, in the storms and in the fury of the storm
and of Life.

Our knowledge is all-knowing, yet we continue to learn things every day, as is our right.
Treat your kin with as much respect as you wish to be treated and you cannot be lead astray.
Treasure every day as if it were your last, cherishing the beauty of all
life and all things.
Protect this rugged Earth Mother as best you can. Honor Her. Even if it is but a Rock, know that it too has its own spirit. Life is everywhere, and magick can be breathed in as its purest essence.

Known as the Goddess's child, no matter what you call Her, She is always there beside you, inside you, and with you. Believe this always and you will never be forsaken, even when there is a lesson to be learned that
She must teach you, even if that lesson whips you across the face, it has purpose and reason.

Keep your eyes and your ears open, and listen not only with the physical eye but the astral ones, for there are signs in all things. In the wind, the rain, the sky and the deep earth.

Never look back on your past until you feel you are ready and remember we have a long way to go. We all have our shadows to face.

There is Strength in the Darkness, In Shadows and also in The Light.
Shadows cannot exist without perfect balance of Light and Dark.
We are the Children of Grey Magick and its Power is Thine to Wield!

Dark Goddess Hecate's celebration day is November 16

The Goddess Hecate was a deity of the night, crossroads, life and death. She was called Most Lovely One, the Distant One, Queen of the World of Spirits, goddess of witchcraft. To the Thracians especially, Hecate was goddess of the Moon, the dark hours, and the Underworld. Midwives were connected with her.

Some myths say Hecate was the daughter of the Titans Tartaros and Night; other versions say of Perseus and Asteria (Starry-Night), or of Zeus and Hera. We do know her worship did not originate in Greece. One of her sacred animals was the toad, a symbol of conception. She was called the goddess of transformation as she ruled over the various passages of life, and could change forms or ages.

Hecate was considered to be the third aspect of the Moon, the Hag or Crone (Carrier of Wisdom).

The Greeks called Hecate the Hag of the Dead. (The word "hag" may have come from the Egyptian word "heq", meaning a matriarchal ruler who knew magickal words of power.)

An ally of Zeus, she was accompanied by a pack of hounds.

An aspect of the Amazon goddess, Hecate's chariot was pulled by dragons. Her symbols were the key and the cauldron. The women who worshipped her often stained their palms and soles with henna. Her festivals were held at night by torchlight. Every year on the island of Aegina in the Saronic Gulf, a mysterious festival was held in her honor.

DARK MOON INCENSE: 1/4-1/2 cup base, 1 tsp. calamis, 1/2 tsp. each of eucalyptus, juniper and patchouli, 10-15 drops of Dark Moon oil. Make this incense three nights before the New Moon. Allow it to sit outside for each of those three nights, but do not allow sunlight to touch it.

It is also good for working darker magic and communing with dark deities such as Hecate and Lilith as well as darker aspects of the personality. This is also an excellent time for binding and banishing spells.

The darker aspects of magick are more effective at this time such as binding, blasting, and cursing. Because it is the night when negative energy sometimes abounds and baneful spirits can roam free, practitioners of magick and the psychically sensitive must make very sure to ward themselves and to protect themselves.
