This term, so simple yet so complex a topic. Shadow Work.
November is a good time for Shadow-work. It's a time of reflection in the darker months.
We all have this other side, we push out of view, but it's part of our complex character. An important part. Society expects us to behave and act in a certain way. Indeed, it's tutored into us from the moment before we can understand, body language, speech and all it's inflections, and the repercussions that follow our actions as very young children influence our conduct.
We learn to temper ourselves and our reactions to others, situations and circumstances. This helps Society tick. It keeps the Beast from the Door. But, we do need to work on our Shadow. It enables self-understanding of how WE tick. Why we react the way we do. Humans are angel and devil rolled into one; who find themselves combined within the MIDDLE ground.
A person cannot survive healthily, for themselves or others, living solely as dark, or light. We have to be a mixture. That middle ground is the whole. If we lean too far to one side or the other, we are out of control of ourselves. Playing, acting, or helplessly reacting in life. Therefore we need to understand why 'this' irritates us, or 'that' brings us joy.
'Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes. Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate. C.G. Jung
Ego also plays it's part. We need to look closely at our reactions to the life around us, just as an artist does their subject. It is a part of learning to cope with life and all it entails, with balance rather than disgust, rage or helplessness.
'Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is. If an inferiority is conscious, one always has a chance to correct it.'
'Like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.'
Carl Gustav Jung
