History of the Skull and Crossbones

if we take a look back in history, the skull and the crossbones has a very long history. Let's take a look at it.

In the Stregheria Tradition of Witchcraft that Raven Grimassi teaches, the skull represents our sacrificial God. The crossbones represent the guardianship over the gateway to the Otherworld. The skull also represents ancestral knowledge and wisdom. It is also believed that the skull has oracular powers when a lit candle is placed upon it's head, and also it is believed that when a candle is placed upon the skulls head it is a symbol of communication "between the worlds".

In history as Christ went to the cross, "And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull" (Matthew 27:33). It is a metaphor and a symbol of higher attainment by sacrificial death, either by putting your body down in some way to receive enlightenment, such as Woden hung upside down from the Life Tree for nine days to receive the runes.

The Skull and the Crossbones were the insignia for The Knights Templars. To the Knights Templars, the Skull and Crossbones also meant "Higher Attainment, and enlightenment", and the crossbones are a symbol of "balance". The Knights Templars seeking the Holy Grail, were actually seeking the Holy Grail because they believed they would receive "higher enlightenment" and "transformation" from the grail that they sought. The Skull and crossbones were sacred to the Knights Templars as was the grail. The Knights Templars were soldiers for the cross of Jesus Christ. They fought many wars for the sake of the cross, and the Catholic Church, owed much money to the Knights Templars. The church decided that they owed too much money to the Knights Templars and decided instead of paying them for all of their faithfulness, they would disassimble them. The Church accused the Knights Templars of Witchcraft, and burned many of them. They were tortured and burned on a Friday the thirteenth. Before the Knights Templars were burned, Friday the thirteenth use to be a very lucky and fortunate day to people. That is how Friday the thirteenth became to become an unlucky day, was when the Knights Templars were burned. Some of the Knights Templars ran. After the knights Templars were disassimilated they moved to a place called Malta. The knights Templers worshipped the Goddess Athena while there and had taken themselves to piracy for lack of money to look honestly for the Holy Grail. The Knights Templars had one of the largest fleets of ships in the world, and since the skull and crossbones were their insignia, they hung their flag with their  isignia of the skull and crossbones on their ships.. So, we now see how we have our first pirates. It was the Knight's Templars searching for the Holy Grail.

The skull was so worshipped by Christians in early Christianity that priests and commoners would keep a skull next to them or on their laps as they prayed. It used to be that many crucifixes were adorned with the skull.

In Gerina Dunwich's book, "The Wicca Spellbook", she says that the skull is an amulet of power, protecting the wearer from bad magick, and sends hexes and curses back to the sender. She also adds that the skull brings good luck. I love Gerina Dunwich's books. You will learn lots of spells and so much of of everything from that woman.

So now you have the history and symbolism of the skull and the crossbones! Blessed be! helela
