Your kid probably loves Mr. Potato Head from the very popular kids’ movie Toy Story.

What You Need:

  • A potato – raw or boiled with the skin intact
  • A big mushroom boiled
  • Diced carrot
  • Sliced red bell peppers
  • Broccoli
  • Two black olives
  • Sautéed lettuce or spinach leaves
  • Diced cucumber
  • Toothpicks

How To Make:

  • Depending on whether you want to eat it baked or boiled, use the potato in the chosen form.
  • Help your kid cut the vegetables using a kid safety knife. Alternatively, you can let them break the vegetables, if possible. Using toothpicks help your kid make Mr. Potato Head’s ears with mushrooms.
  • Now help make the eyes by using the black olives.
  • Help make the nose using a diced carrot.
  • Help make the mustache using red bell pepper.
  • Use cucumber to make the mouth.
  • Ask your child to place some lettuce or spinach on the potato to create few hair strands.
  • Add a flower of broccoli to make a hat.

If you have used a boiled potato, the craft is ready to be eaten. Alternatively, you can bake it for your kid.

Natural Dyed Egg - ©Flickr user Moonlightbulb

Use herbs to create your own natural herbal dyes for coloring eggs. Learn how tomake all natural dyes and make unique, lovely decorations for Easter and beyond.

Difficulty: Easy

Time Required: 30 minutes for prep, overnight for richest colors

Here's How:

  1. Wash eggshell in soapy water to remove natural waxy coating.
  2. Bring water to boil.
  3. Add dried herbs.
  4. Add mordant.
  5. Bring water, herbs, and mordant to a simmer.
  6. Boil 20 to 30 minutes, or until desired color is reached. The darker, the better.
  7. Add room temperature eggs and reduce heat to a simmer. Continue heating for 20 more minutes.
  8. Remove from heat, cover and let cool to room temperature.
  9. Gently place in refrigerator to continue to deepen color overnight if desired.
  10. Remove dyed egg from liquid and dry.
  11. Rub with vegetable oil and buff to a beautiful shine.

Tips:

  1. Brown dye - Comfrey leaves, juniper berries, rose hips, fennel
  2. Yellow dye - Chamomile, yarrow, Goldenrod
  3. Green - Rosemary, hyssop, spinach(not an herb, but a lovely green)
  1. Purple - Hibiscus flowers(absolutely stunning), violet flowers
  2. Red - St. John's wort, dandelion root

What You Need:

  • 12 eggs
  • 8 cups water
  • 8 Tbsp of dried herb
  • 2 Tbsp of mordant, white vinegar, alum or cream of tartar - to set the dye

Natural Easter Egg

Natural Easter Egg Decorations

BY

Put a unique twist on Easter eggs with creative food-based embellishments

Seeds, spices, and dried herbs make unique and all-natural Easter egg decorations. Apply school glue, such as Elmer's, to the egg—directly from the bottle using the applicator tip or with a small paintbrush—then roll the egg in your choice of seeds and herbs. Experiment with different dried herbs, seeds, and whole spices, including sesame, poppy, basil, cumin, dill, salt, mustard, celery, dried lemon peel, and dried parsley.

To create interesting patterns, you can draw lightly on the shell with a pencil to make a guide for where to apply the glue. You can also use a stencil to trace more exact shapes and detailed designs onto the egg. Hold the taped section of string (on either side of the shell) to keep the egg steady or hold onto the egg itself, placing your fingers in the areas without glue.

You can either hang these eggs on a hanger to dry (as with the painted eggs) or place them back in their carton—or really anywhere they won't roll around—to dry.
