a spell to help my friend focus? i like to work very earthy, traditional and practical things, if you've got anything like that.

Answer:

The burning of Frankincense can help, but here’s a more complete spell from Valerie Worth:

A Charm to Nourish the Wits and Renew the Powers

“You must go in late summer to certain rank stream beds or low pasturelands to seek out the blue vervain, [in this case some store-bought might have to do] whose flowers are small and near purple and whose stem is four-sided. Pluck this herb, several stalks of it, and bring these into the chamber where your works are most often performed. Here four candles of violet hue shall be lighted, and an oil of sweet lavender, in a dish, set in readiness. Bare the floor of this chamber, and inscribe upon it in blue chalk a large circle. In its center set the oil and the stalks of vervain, also a good length of black cord. Then step into the circle, and with the chalk write these words small around its inner circumference:

Verbena hastata
Quattuor elementa
Qattor loci
Hasta verba
Viam monstra

Next bind up the stalks of vervain with the cord spiralled about their full length, to make a thick wand. Dip its flowered end into the oil and with it retrace the circle, anointing its boundary well with sweetness. The circle, so charmed, should then be covered up and hidden by a rug or carpet, to be preserved until time shall wear it away, and the wand of vervain hung up over the entrance to this chamber, that it may direct the ways of the one who passes and repasses beneath it. So shall the influence of this ancient herb be fixed there, and the wisdom it conjures arise perpetually in those surroundings.”

This should work to refresh the mind and workings, not only for academic or monetary pursuits, but also for magical endeavors.

Also the great and powerful coffee bean makes a real good potion! ;) Might give that a shot as well.
There is a stronger alternative to coffee, although the side effects are slightly different. It’s called Guarana. If you take any medications or have serious health risks or allergies, talk to your doctor first, but it might be useful. Possible side effects especially of overuse can include a change in blood sugar that may cause nervousness, insomnia, and possible psychic habituation.
