The altar in many traditions is an intricate part of many religious and spiritual traditions, the altar is a tool which is utilized in ritual to venerate deities and make offerings and or sacrifices to God or in this case (The Force) which I use in place of God for I feel that God is so vast and so great that a total understanding of God is beyond human comprehension so I use the Force as a supplemental title that encompasses the greatness of God and the miracles of the universe. When setting up an altar it is important that your altar be totally devoted to your practice, this is your sacred space, your area in which you tune in with the eternal flame that is the Force and where you can give up your offerings in a sign of gratitude and come closer to the Force. This is a space of spiritual power for you and is an extension of yourself just as the lightsaber of the fictional Jedi is an extension of themselves. When setting up your altar it is good to do a spiritual cleansing of the area that you wish to set up, burning sage and or other incense is a good way to clear your area of negative energies and revitalize the energy in your area with positive energy. In many traditions, you will find that there are certain directions in which the altar should be placed but I find that for my own practice direction does not matter as it is the work that is put into your practice that makes the difference. In the creation of your personal altar, you should try to find objects that represent your spiritual path and place them upon your altar, this can be things such as statues of deities, incense, pictures, ritual tools as well as having things to represent the elements and a number of other objects. What matters most is the feeling that your altar gives you. Trust in the Force to guide your process. Now that your spiritual area or sacred space has been cleared of negative energies and your altar set up, now would be a good time to dedicate and bless your area. To begin the dedication place a candle on both the left and the right of your altar and light a white candle that you can hold in your hand. Begin by circling in a clockwise direction the area you wish to work and use the candle in your hand to light the candles on the altar from left to right while chanting this dedication:
“By the light of the Force which cuts
Through the darkness, by the light
Of the Fire that burns within; by the
Will of the Force which stirs the
Elements, let nothing harmful in.”
After you have circled your sacred space place the candle in your hand in the center of your altar and place your hand's palm side up while closing your eyes and say “May the Force make it so.” Now that you have dedicated your altar it is time to do whatever work you feel needs done in your life.
-Closing The Space-
Once you have finished your work return to your altar and pick up the candle in the center of your altar and begin to walk anti-clockwise around your sacred area while chanting:
“By the Force which called the elements,
By the fire which burned so bright,
By the light of the Force which lit the darkness
I will leave you for tonight.”
Set the candle in your hand on the altar and extinguish it. Then work your way from right to left extinguishing the candles and say: May the Force make it so.
