is a polypore mushroom belonging to the family Albatrellaceae? Grifolin, a secondary metabolite isolated from the fresh fruiting bodies of A. confluens, has been shown to inhibit the growth of some cancer cell lines in vitro by up-regulating death-associated protein kinase in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells (Luo et al. 2011).

Ye et al. (2007) identified the novel targets of Grifolin by studying its effect on the human nasopharyngeal carcinoma (CNE1) cell line. Grifolin induces dephosphorylation and up-regulates death-associated protein kinase 1 (DAPK1) in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells NPCs and HONE1. Grifolin promoted the protein–protein interaction of DAPK1 and ERK1/2 to prevent ERK1/2 nucleolus translocation. Findings indicate that Grifolin might represent a promising candidate in the prevention and intervention of cancer by targeting DAPK1 signaling to induce cell cycle G1 phGase arrest (Luo et al. 2011).

The anticancer properties, antibiotic activity, and chemical composition of Lenzites betulina ethanol extract (EE) were evaluated. Eight compounds including 5 sterols were isolated from L. betulina, and 7 compounds were isolated from L. betulina for the first time. The EE displayed strong anticancer activity against tumors.
